Ordered four gallons of Similar 41 PR from illstreet, and they sent a larger bottle of MEKP....everything good so far.

Wife still had some of the Castin' Craft MEKP she was using(might as well finish using the bottle, right) with the new resin. Everything still going to plan. Well, as all things go...she ran out of the Castin'Craft MEKP and started using the 'new big bottle'(used the same number of drops per ounce), things changed!

The 'new stuff' doesn't set up!! Even after 4 days, it's still a liquid:eek: Contacted illstreet, and they told me the required amount should be 10-11 drops per ounce(or more). Or that my cold temps are having an effect on the pours(okay, if it weren't 80*F I might buy that).

Has anyone else had issues lately with a recent order from them? Talking about the MEKP only....does MEKP go bad?

Yes, I have contacted the vendor, but still wanted to know your opinions.

MEKP will, in fact, go bad and it can happen very quickly. I had a bottle that was left uncorked (the little red stoppers were not put back on the bottle after use). Three day later, the activator was no good. It seems to go bad faster under very hot and humid conditions.

If the new resin worked fine with the old Castin' Craft MEKP, but not with the new bottle of MEKP, then it definitly sounds like they sent you a bad bottle of MEKP. If they won't resolve the problem quickly, then I would go down to Home Depot and buy a bottle. It's next to the fiberglass resin which is probably near the glues.

I've heard conflicting reports. A couple of people I know who are in the fiberglass business tell me that MEKP doesn't go bad. On the other hand, I've heard that exposure to sunlight can ruin MEKP. The documenatation I've read says to store it in a cool dark place and expect 3-6 months of full potency, and slightly decreased activity after that. If stored out of the sun at 50-70 degrees F, MEKP can last for years. I've personally used MEKP that is at least 3 years old (and not stored under optimal conditions) without issue.

Eric

I just started a new bottle I picked up at illstreet a couple weeks ago. I finally talked them in to not giving me as much anymore. I have bottles upon bottles of the stuff. They also aren't familiar with what we use the resin for so they really don't know better than 10 drops per oz.

Needless to say it was good to go. In fact it messed up my timing bc it was full strength as opposed to the previous bottle that lasted me over 10gal!

Thanks....

Guess I just got one of them 'oops bottles'. Ordered some more, HD had MEK but not the MEKP(so I didn't want to chance it not being the right stuff).

Picked up a small bottle of Castin'Craft stuff yesterday and used it this morning. It set up just the way we had remembered it doing.

Follow-up question:
How can I dispose of the bottle of stuff that doesn't do right?

Don't want to dump it in the toilet and kill furry creatures or anything. Is it safe to dump in the burn barrel with my wood scraps?

MEK is not the right stuff. You did right to get MEKP.

Check out http://www.penturners.org/forum/f43/disposing-mekp-89479/ . I don't want to say how most people get rid of MEKP, but most defiinately DO NOT mix it with wood scraps.
