Ok. I have no insurance. I have no money to speak of. I think i have a hernia (or two). There is a place locally that will help but it pretty much has to be deemed an emergency. I have a dime sized lump on one side of my lower stomach/ upper groin area, and a nickel sized lump on the other side. They are both centrally located below the lymph nodes, and right in the crease of the leg/stomach/groin. It hurts to do just about everything, and seemed to spring up practically overnight.

So, Is there anything i can do at home? WebMD said to gently massage the spot and try to get it to go back, but with much pressure, i feel a pain in my chest so i am scared to be rubbing on them.

I just don't want to go sit at the ER (1 hour, 1 way) for 4 or 5 hours to be told to go home and put ice on it or something stupid.

Thanks in advance for any help on the subject!

My wife who has a great deal of medical training said " If its just below the lymph nodes" you really need to see a Dr. It is very unusual for men to get bilateral hernias at the same time. Good luck.

they are both in the same spot on each side. about an inch to inch and a half under the lymph nodes, diagonally toward the inside. I think i am gonna have to go to the hospital tomorrow i guess.

If it is incarcerated, it could become strangulated and lead to complications like
necrosis, gangrene, peritonitis etc. so it isn't anything to take lightly. Get it looked
at right away.

If it is a hernia, there's two choices depending on how serious it is.
If it's not serious, they'll schedule surgery for later. If it's strangulated
they'll wheel you into the OR immediately.

ok, so i am going for sure. thanks for the heads up guys! My stomach has been bothering me for a few days, and i have been heaving my grandkid around, and rearranging my shop, including a full size fridge with no help so i guess i overdid it. geesh, aparently getting older really does suck!

Praying for you Ron. When you can give us an update, please do, but the main thing is to get yourself checked and follow the doctor's orders.

Ron,
Here is my experience..
I had a hernia in about the same spot 10 years ago.
Was doing a lot of heavy lifting and pulling on my job then.It started small, like you describe. I thought it would get better, i just needed to take it easy for a while. I put it off as long as I could, until it grew to the size of a hens egg.It became so painful
I was about ready to puke, couldn't hardly walk from the pain.
Outpatient surgery and several weeks later, I was fine. It was not a fun recovery.
I went down on my knees going up the deck steps after I got home.
But I am doing well yet today, no problems, so it's likely just not something you can put off.
Get it looked at somehow. If it gets any bigger and if you gotta be an emergency case..make it look like one. It probably will be soon, anyway.

Regarding your insurance issue, can you go to a "university" hospital? I'm not sure whrere your town is in Texas, but check out these afiliated hospitals. Here in Nashville, if one does not have insurance, Vanderbilt hospitals won't turn people away. Good luck, hope to hear some good news soon.

Don't wait too long.... I had an umbilical hernia... just above the belly button.. it started as a nickel sized bump that I could push back in... over a couple of years, it grew to about the size of a large lemon.... but I could still push it back in and a couple of doctors said to watch it but as long as it was soft probably not a problem..... the last Sunday in September I came in from the shop and notices it was tender.. also didn't seem to able to push it back in so easily.... before the night was out, it had swollen to about the size of a small orange and was very hard.... a trip to ER by ambulance (my wife has some vision problems and can't see to drive at night) Monday morning at 0800 I was in surgery and wound up with an 8" scar right through the belly button (I look like a gutted fish now)... It was strangulated and I wound up with not only an emergency hernia repair, but a partial bowel resection as well.....
it's not worth taking chances.

well this mornint when i got up, i about freaked out. Now there is two knots on each side. One big, and one small. I started to just go to the hospital, but first i called my brothers ex, who happens to be a 25 year nurse. She informed me that my little brother used to get the same swolen lymph nodes. I thought there was only one lymph node down there but apparently there are a bunch. She said it was likely the same problem he used to have, so i called him. He cosigned everything she told me.

So now i am amping up on Vitamin C and all that, cause she said i was probably coming down with a bug. She told me to watch them for a couple of days and if they get worse then go in. WHEW! That would be totally awesome! From Guaranteed surgery to eating Vitamin C! YEAY

You can do what you want.. but if there is a possibility that this in a hernia
and it is as painful as you suggest, do NOT overlook the possibility that it
could be (or become) strangulated.
The difference between discomfort and fatality could be as little as 6 hours.

I hope it's not serious, but asking someone over the phone isn't a diagnosis.
Neither is advice over the internet. Get seen ASAP and then you won't
have to wonder.

I agree. Don't mess around with your health. Things can go from minor and easily treatable to serious and life altering real quick. Seems like every time I go to the doc, it turns out to be a minor issue. When I get the bright idea to wait it out, it bites me in the butt every time.

Hopefully it's no big deal and you'll be OK. Take care of yourself..

Dave

Another voice in agreement... see my post on page 2.... I went from "oh it just an umbilical hernia.. nothing to worry about.. doesn't bother me," to an emergency ride in an Ambulance and surgery in about a 4 or 5 hour period... even without insurance, a short visit to a doctor won't break the bank, and could save your life...And here's hoping it's nothing but a swollen lymph node.... but even that can be problem.... Get it looked at.

Add another to the "Get it looked at so you know for sure what it is" column. As far as health bills as long as you are trying to pay something on it, even as little as 5.00 a month, they can not really do anything. I believe it is a law that even if you do not have insurance that they can not turn you away and up until a few years ago Medical Bills couldn't be used against your credit score, I found out after I was married that my Mom had not paid medical bills from when I had to have knee surgery from playing football while I was in school yet, as long as you explain things to them and make an effort they USUALLY dont give you a hassle. As someone else said please dont mess around with your health my Mom did that for over a year by not going to a Dr. even though she was having problems and when she finally did they did tests and told us she had cancer and that it was too far progressed for chemo and she passed away this past June less then 3 yrs later, you are having different problems but your health is your health if you dont see a Dr. we can all say it could be this or that and so can anyone else but you will never know for sure unless you see the right people and have them checked. Sorry for going on and on, but I hope this helps in some way... Len

I am far from being a fan of doctors but if I had noticable lumps and pain I would go have it looked at.
Let us know how you are and what it turned out to be.

yup... still here!

It is going away now. I am going t save up for a doctor visit though, just to be safe!

Sorry to hear about your troubles, I don't any citizen of one of the richest nations in the world should find himself in your predicament.

Was watching the news tonight here in Oz and it had a segment about the US Senate passing something or other to do with Obama's health reform.

They then showed the head of the AMA saying, with a straight face, that, and I quote "The US has the best health service in the world".

I don't think anyone in countries like the UK, Sweden, Holland and Australia would find himself in your predicament, so I don't know what planet he is from:eek:

Anyway, I'll get off me soap box.

Heck, we cannot find affordable insurance for my wife (62). These insurance companies that keep calling us (off of einsurance) are scammers. They are discount houses and they do not provide coverage. We found out the hard way and now have two thousand dollars we owe in the procedure that they would not cover. We have no insurance for her and are keeping our fingers crossed. A major illness would wipe us out.
