It started with a single pen. Now I found a deal on wood blanks. A full box for less than $25.00 It is cheap for starting out and there will hopefully be some unique pieces. I believe it was mahogany. Now to wait for the mail. Next it will progress to looking at wire brush handles at HF and cutting boards at the dollar store.

Don't feel to bad. I started this pen turning stuff about 4 months ago. I found a few deals like you and so far I have 6 boxes of blanks like the one in your picture and I have another in the mail. If that isn't enough I have all of the native and exotic scrap pieces that I could throw out that I have had for 5-10 years.

Happy turning
Chris

Bobby you may want to try and TRADE some of your surplus blanks with some other members here and try to trade for species that they may have as surplus. This is the way I started out here and made some good trades and most importantly some great friends.

When they say it's addictive .. they say it for a reason. We have, as all good addicts do, one main pusher er... i mean supplier for exotics and burls but even at that we have many many blanks and have received many many boxes. I wouldn't trade it for any other habit in the world though. You will find most of us willing to help you out when we can, point you in the right directions etc and even help ya spend more money than you thought you possibly could on this "inexpensive" little hobby. Happy turning and just wait until you get into a couple of exotic burls .. there is no turning back at that point! ... oh Nolan ....

This is a great group of people mos of whom will share their knowledge and offer reasonable, Honest(if some time stinging) crituques of your work, and everyone I've had contact with have been super nice, I've even got some wood blanks sent me by one member free, the fellow woudn't accept postage, Nice to be associating with peolpe in this group,I'll be cutting some nice purple heart soo and most likely will have a bit to share, [)][)]

Good luck with your mahogany. A friend gave me two 12' lengths of 2X2" mahogany. I turned him an Artisan pen (shop pencil) from it for a thank you. Personally, I did not enjoy turning it, very hard. Unlike some other hard-hard woods, it didn't turn happily for me like OO or Lignum Vitae. You might enjoy though.

My experience w/Mahogany is quite different from Frank. What I have turns nicely and finishes very well. shrug[?] What this really means is that one will find significant differences in woods even w/in the same species. It has been my experience that older (and more dry) timber is more difficult to turn. Very dry wood will not come off in shavings, but rather fine particulate matter (read dust) more similar to what sanding creates. This can be somewhat frustrating, but the end result is often worth it.;)

I figured it can be used for other projects. Everyone in the family might get cutting boards for presents.
