Decided to make up a batch of those magnet from cutoffs following the article in the library. But first I had to make the little chuck with screw to hold the blank. The first one I drilled on the lathe with the wood centered in my scroll chuck. I went to put the screw in and for some reason it came out off center. So I made a second one out of a harder wood, Ipe I think. Put the screw in and after it started the head snapped off. Hole was pre-drilled to correct size on both of them. So I said the heck with the screw I will use double sided tape. That didn't hold so I tried to use hot glue. That worked a little better but still didn't hold. So I switched to a little CA which worked great until it came time to remove it which resulted in a broken top hat. So long story short - I managed to get one out of ten done in four hours and really raised my blood pressure. So what am I missing that makes this so easy?:frown::confused:

I wonder if I could make by taking a small piece of steel rod and drilling/tapping a small threaded insert and then the thread the small pieces like a bottle stopper mandrel?

RJ, you can make a "chuck" yourself. Take a piece of 1/2" stock (alum. or brass would be easier on your tools when in use)...face the end square...center drill...drill hole to fit thread diameter of screw you intend to use x 1/2" deep. Turn stock end-for-end...face...center drill...drill to fit head diameter of screw you intend to use x 1/8" short of going through. Epoxy screw into hole. Done!

I used to do lapidary work. A product called dop wax might work better than hot glue. You heat the dop wax and dip the end of a dowel in the wax then press the stone/wood to the wax, allow to cool then turn. To remove the finished item put the dowel and turned item in the freezer for about an hour the wax will get real brittle and snap right off.
