A generous friend who lives in Pender Harbor, BC gave me some Madrone logs (known as Arbutus here on the west coast of Canada from the Latin name Arbutus menziesii). The menziesii part refers to the much travelled Scot, Archibald Menzies. The wood had been stored outside and thus not dry. However being eager to try it, some work on the bandsaw to make some blanks, followed by turning round and drilling through the center, after a few days the wood was dry enough to use. The attached is the result. Arbutus is most prized for the root burl, which attracts a high price if you can actually get some. I am hoping that my friend can supply at some point! I have lots of Arbutus to try. So, more pens and perhaps other objects, such as coasters, will be made.
