My wife and I were camping in Gettysburg PA, amazing place to see if you've never been there. One day we decided to take a drive to Frederick MD since it was only 40 min away and found this absolute gem, Frederick Lumber Company www.fredericklumber.com. This place is an absolute candy store of lumber, more different exotics than I have ever seen and decent prices too. Check out the website, the photos are very representative.

I picked up the following, L to R. Bolivian Rosewood, Cocobolo, Patagonian Rosewood. Also some pen blanks of redwood burl, curly eucalyptus and Thyua burl.

The staff is amazing, well worth the stop if you are in the area. There was also an amazing 2" live edge slab of Koa, 8'x4' but I didn't have 2k to spend.

Well, think of it like this... 2"x96"x48" is 9216 cubic inches, which when broken down into 3/4"x3/4"x5" chunks is.... (assume about a 10% loss to edge and kerf, carry the two) ... a metric goatload of koa pen blanks.

Of course, don't forget to factor in the cost of the disguises you would need to ever go into that store again when they found out you did WHAT with that slab?

If you love Frederick Lumber, you should check out their (once upon a time) sister store Exotic Lumber in Annapolis, MD. So much selection (huge inventory many times the size of Frederick), high quality, and pretty reasonable prices for such rare and exotic stuff they stock. Alternatively, if you're willing to take a slight detour on your way back north (assuming you're not already back), Hearne Hardwoods in Oxford, PA is another awesome spot. I've gone there and walked away with premium curly koa, quilted maple, rosewoods, and ebony from their scrap bins at just a few bucks a pound!

We have a warehouse in Seymore a little south of Knoxville that is much like that... they have tons of woods, both exotics and domestics...
I rarely can get out for less than $300.... My last visit last week, I found out the original owners, a husband and wife team, have decided to retire and have sold the store... the new owners were on vacation and Bob and Cynthia were covering for them, so not sure how the new owners will be, but Cynthia spoke highly of him. They have boards anywhere from short 3 or 4 feet long to 12-14 feet, but will cut anything you want. They also will plane it if you want.

Chuck, what is the name and address of the business? Wife and I like to take day trips as her time is limited as a caregiver. She does have a day during the week that we could drive up. After all, one never has too much wood. ☺️

Another treasure in Williamsburg, VA is "LIVE EDGE Slabs & Hardwood"(757)208-08966. While only open Thursday thru Sunday the owner is extremely knowledgabe and has some wonderful stock as well as Antiques and Custom Tables. Philip

John,
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner...
the business is called JEFFRIES WOOD WORKS, INC.... ADDR: 8807 VALGRO ROAD, KNOXVILLE, TN 37920
PHONE: 865 573 5876..... FAX 865 573 6367

The phone may change as the Jeffries just sold out to another person, first name JASON... no last name yet... he wasn't there my last visit last week.... not sure how to tell you to get there... we go through Maryville on 411 to 441 that runs into the Chapman highway, then turn back towards Knoxville... you probably could Google the address.... they are off the beaten path a bit, behind a big church on Chapman highway.

I like art museums, but a great lumber store is even better. If you are ever in New Hampshire you should visit Goose Bay Lumber. I could spend hours there. Exotic woods you already love, and others you've never heard of.
