Check into your local community college adult classes, as some have jewelry, silver smithing classes, also check into the local rock and gem club since a lot of them have classes. Ours has a number of basic and advanced classes thru the year.
As to books there are too many to count.

Dover books has some, and Amazon will have the lot. You didn't mention what it is metal you want to cast. Since pewter, silver, bronze and brass all have different requirements.
You will also find that there will be books just on the wax work end with nothing on the investment end(mold).

Practical Casting,by Tim McCreight is a great basic one

Any by CW Ammen in the casting field will be good for the materials specific's.

An old one by Greta Pack Jewelry making by the lost wax Process

Basic Wax Modeling, by Hirsroshi Tsuyuki another old one but great.

You will find most general books on jewelry making have chapters/sections on the subject.

You will also find that if you have no shop experience in the craft of casting that the equipment costs will add up fast. Even if you do on the cheap,
Some words of caution, there are some people that have posted vid's on the net that show practices that can and will get you seriously hurt to killed. They have been lucky, and or they are doing things that don't react the way it would in casting of molten metal normally.(controlled experiments that go against the norm)

Here's a thread where I tried to develop some interest in lost wax casting. In the first post there is a pdf file which may have some information.

Like PT said, its best to find a local class where you can at least learn how to carve wax. Many jewelry artists just carve the wax and send out for casting to the experts. I send mine to Cranston Casting in Rhode Island.

Here are some photos of wax tools and types of wax

The craft melter and lamps are used to attach wax to each other and carve the wax.
