Anybody else been experiencing extremely slow or misdirected shipping of items?

For 1, I ordered 2 pen kits the 2nd week of Dec from PSI and just today was informed via e-mail that they would be shipped tomorrow. Granted Holiday season and all, but that is horrendous and of course they will be getting a nice little phone call.

On another item, a long time friend of mine sent an item to me from upstate NY on Monday just to find out that it was delivered someplace in San Pedro, CA. I have no idea how the post office misconstrued Buena Vista,CO 81211 with San Pedro, CA 90733 but they did and even when calling them about it, we both were told that there was nothing they could do to correctly re-route the package. They would have to wait atleast a week to see if the item goes unclaimed before sending it back to the originating address.

Hell of a start to the new year isn't it? Hope you all are having much better luck with packages going here and there

PSI orders take awhile to get to our place but they are a great co. to deal with.

As for the other problem, it seems funny to me the post office has to "wait" to see if anyone claims a mis-delivered package [V]

I have had some people criticize me for writing the states names out in full but after having a couple of "abbreviated" letters go to the wrong state, I decided it was better to write it out. I also PRINT the addresses, which aggravates my wife.

All of the mail that I send back to the States, mine now gets there in 4 to 7 days from Japan with no problems. LOML writes her addresses in cursive and abbreviates the state name and she "wonders" why hers takes 10 days or so.

I have found that if you do not put the ZIP some won't deliver it even to a small town with only one zip code. But if you DO put the ZIP, they will not pay attention to it as the delivered address. I sent a package to my grandkids in Augusta, Arkansas 4 years ago. It was sent to Augusta, GA even though ARKANSAS was written and the correct zip code was on it. Took 6 weeks to correct that.

I have noticed that most of the mail I send overseas gets there faster than within the U.S. coast to coast. I think it has to do with everything going by air or something.

I just have send out numerous shipments in the Abranet group buy, and was very surprised how fast the first class (very large) envelopes and small packages were received. Even with the holidays - most of it was shipped on the 24. and received on 26 and 27 of December. Also, a two shipments from AZ before Christmas and around New Years came very fast (two days). So, I am lately very happy with the USPS.
On the dark side, I ordered (12/20) some acrylic blanks from CSUSA and had them shipped via UPS Ground. It took 14 days to get to me. It took 7 days to get from UT to NJ (!) and then it was sitting from 12/28 to 1/3 here in NJ in the UPS facility.
This is unacceptable.

Little knowledge from the airlines. Most major carriers ship mail/packages for the USPS. Southwest does not ship mail anymore. It became too much of a burden to fulfill the post offices demands. Then if we made a mistake they would fine us. Those fines can add up very quickly. Plus they wanted us to develope a new scanning system and take over the distribution point at the airport with our employees instead of theirs. All the while only paying pennies on the pound.

We were authorized up to 100,000 lbs a day in just PHX, not to include stuff coming from other cities to be transferred to another airplane. This was not pleasent to deal with. haha

It's really sad but it’s not just a single company, I ordered some cartridges from Gary Max, I think he said he mailed them on the 10th I still haven't seen them but he mailed me a replacement order and I got them in two days, Just before Woodnwhimsies moved, I placed a pretty decent size (for me) order) usually I normally get orders from them in two days, I have gotten them the next day once or twice, the order that was shipped November 7th got to me on the 21st, it looked like it had been dragged here behind the truck. I'm guessing that the last postal rate increase was to afford a new book of excuses, the standard ones were getting pretty thin and worn out.

We shipped Priority flat rate box to Britain, Dec 14. Expected delivery 6-10 days - it's still not there. Trace response: "We'll get back to you within the next 26 DAYS!!!!!!!!!" Last time stamp O'Hare (Chicago) Dec. 15 - left!

But we HAVE shipped dozens of packages and have only LOST one. I guess that isn't too bad.

I've had mixed results with shipments to the USA. Delivery has been anywhere from a quick of 5 days to a snail pace of 24+ days. My conclusion is that "it is what it is". Sometimes it gets there fast and sometimes it takes much longer. The good thing is that my 'mailed' packages eventually have all arrived at their destinations.

Airrat can confirm, but most mail that moves via air arrives in bags piled in the truck, then dumped into the ramp carts and either crammed into the aircraft containers or hand loaded into the aircraft... standard description of "Fragile" - do not drop or throw over 20 feet - (this was policy my airlines used waaaaaaay back in the '70's.

As a rule, according to post office contracts, mail must be loaded on aircraft before the airlines own cargo.. back when mail was profitable for the carriers, they followed the ruls, can't confirm that they still do.

UPS, DHL and FEDEX both use a hub system... all packages go to a central sort warehouse where it runs through a scanner/conveyor system that sorts and directs the packages to final destination..every piece has a tracking number/waybill that controls the individual piece's transit..
I think mail uses a similar sort system, but there are more sort centers. But without the tracking/waybill number control. A piece of mail can get stuck with another piece and be misdirected... USPS has no way to track an individual piece of mail.

Considering the number of packages they handle and the relatively low cost, the USPS does a fair job.

Words of wisdom, I don't ship USPS much anymore. Since I started working with doing many bulk mailing for my job I have come to depend on the post office to not deliver on time. I live in South Central IL and we shipped around 3000 post cards to the Chicago area. It took nearly three weeks before we the first of them were delivered. Somthing that we have found that helps is to print in big red letters "FIRST CLASS" on them. It took the average delivery time down by about a week and nothing else was done different besides that. And remember, delivery confirmation just proves that they lost it, its not insurance.
