It helps elimante the out of round pens.. I was happy with the mandrels until last week. I had finshed a nice piece and when all put together it was slightly out of round.. I have not done one yet.. I am trying to find a dead center.. I will be doing it soon..

I need a mt2.. I went to a few local places to try and find it.. One place said they had 6 of them setting there for at least a year.. Then all of a sudden they all sold.. Guess more people are trying it..

Does this help a bit?

actually the drawing helped a lot i searched over the site to try and find some references to the mandrel turning, but even after several searches got vauge references to other stuff but not the turning, i have had a few of my turnings come up off center and thought this was due to my drilling, but as i have centered and recentered it and never came to a conclusion, im thinking that it was this off centering that was my problem, it just had never occured to me. anyway thank you for the diagram it was very clarifying,(regardless of what they say about your drawing) i recently ordered the drill set from the penn state site that cuts a rounded blank of the size you want, im looking forward to seeing how this works, but im now thinking i should have ordered a set of these dead centers first. thank you all for helping the new guy

I thought the drawing was pretty decent. But, I did wonder about the term "not concentric". I was hoping that the correct term would be "inconcentric". Upon further investigation, I found the proper term to be "nonconcentric". Which then got me thinking about the term "noncontinent", which of course, is incorrect. As though of you who are "incontinent" will attest. ;)

Hey... I am not that good with CAD! I am old school even in that, I use paper and drafting supplies still! I forget who did that here, I had asked if I could save it and use it for days like this.

Matthew, I am glad it helped. Oh, and my youngest son is also named Matthew Thomas. ;)

Dan,

Try here. If you need a MT1 center, it is on the same catalog page, IIRC.

I ordered a #2 live center from grizzly when I rec'd it it was not true. It has a wobble and I'm in the process of trying to get it swapped or set back or something. Just be forewarned about grizzly. This might be the biggest fluke in the world but just letting you know it could happen.

Lee -- if you have an excentric bushing (not the same as an excentric relative) and you turn with the excentric center hole, you will have an excentric turning that is not concentric with the centerline of the tubing.

You can check the bushing with a number of processes ranging from a pencil lead to a dial indicator. The hole can be remachined with a small boring bar, but it would be more value (if your time has any value) to use them for fishing weights and buy new ones. UNLESS you really want to bore the 0.246 holes out for the M sized larger mandrel as some have done.

You can turn an oval pen -- especially a dip pin with three axis turnings. Old (really old) turning technique for screw driver and tool handles.
