After 17 years of protecting this family from killer squirrels and dangerous lizards, there is an empty spot in the shop, in our home and in our hearts. He nursed all of our hurts and sad feelings with that fuzzy face. My son once said "Dad, everything is better after you curl up with Buck". It will take quite a while to walk around the shop or the house and not look for him. If there is a better place for dogs, he's there. He was the best.

Thanks for allowing me this little self counseling.

If you feel as bad as I did when my dog died then my heart really goes out to you. It's tough losing a loved one. I'm getting teared up just writing this and remembering how it felt to lose my best friend. Hang in there.

Sorry for your loss. My dog is very old and vet says has a bad heart so I am trying to enjoy his remaining time. I stole this from A.S. website but this is one of my favorite quotes.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Amazing how they have a way of becoming so much a part of the family.

Sorry to hear about that. Losing a pet is always difficult. We've lost 2 cats in the past year and will probably lose a dog within a year.

My sympathy to you and your family Tommy. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. They are truly a part of the family. We have 2 dogs, 2 cats and 2 birds. It's like a zoo here but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hello,

Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your friend and companion. Two years ago, I was out of town demonstrating at The Woodworking Shows and I lost my best friend "Nutmeg." She was 16 years young, but she was always a puppy to me. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Tommy, So very sorry about Buck, my shop buddie Tony is our late life child and it hurts just thinking of him going to dog heaven.

Thanks for all the thoughts. It's definitely loss of a member of the family. I wish long and healthy lives to each of your pets.

jhop, thank you for that. I had not seen that before. My wife loved it.

Tommy,

Dogs are truly the best of friends. They give love with the only request that their necks and ears be scratched, that they get the stick thrown, and that they have food and water to help them protect the yard from rabbits and dogs that come to the fence. Your dog looks as though he was a great friend.

My lab/german shepherd mix was ten years old when she died suddenly from what we thought was a heart attack in the early evening. We have videos of her that day - running, barking, enjoying life - not slow or subdued in any way - and then, she began howling in the middle of a nap at about 8 PM and just died. That was it. Right in front of our boys - ages 10 and 8.

Fast forward three weeks and we got a lab/border collie mix from the humane society. One year later, added a pure-bred border collie from the same place - and we have been very pleased and happy. Our first dog would have loved these two. It takes time but you will move on.

I'm very sorry this happened - but with time, you will move to a good place. The memory will always be there.

By the way - just a great picture!

Best wishes,
Roger Garrett

Roger, thanks for the comment on the pic. We took that and sent it in to the "All American Mutt Contest". It actually was used in a newsletter that, among other things, advertised for auditions for Letterman's Stupid Pet Tricks. We went to the orange scarf because it helped us find him at night. He also had camo, Stars and Stripes for July 4th, Memorial Day and Veteran's Day. Also had a special one for Christmas. He would sit on that bench or the koi pond filter box and watch for squirrels. Head would go back and forth like a lighthouse. [:D]

Having lost two of our own little buddies in the last few years, I am very sorry for your loss. One thing we got for our daughter who was almost four with the first loss was
Dog Heaven by Cynthia Rylant. I think it helped mom and dad as much as her,

Shawn

It's so hard to lose friends like that, they give such unconditional love. I have lost a few myself and I feel your pain. So, so sorry!

I have 2 little shop helpers / supervisors that are still quite young (1 1/2 yrs), but it brings a lump to my throat to think about the day they wont be there. Sorry for your loss.

Tommy, so sorry for your loss. Take solace in the thought that my Jasper is probably playing tag with him in dog heaven.

I'm so sorry for your loss Tommy. We have a cat missing for a week now and the family is extremely upset. I feel your pain. Pets are part of the family, as you well know. It's very tramatic.
