LOML started nursing school over 20 years ago, but due to life's circumstances had to drop out. In the late 90's we met and I was fortunate enough to be able to help her through medical assistant school, then later through nursing school (ASN degree). But, that wasn't her dream finished. So, 2 years ago she started back to school and will graduate with honors this December with her BSN degree. I have made her several pens all slimlines because she is petite, 4'11" and thats the type of pen she likes. Anyways, I want to make her a special pen for her graduation. I realize she will never use it, but I want it to feel good in her hand anyways. Any recommendations of a slim but elegant pen that I can make her? Thanks for any and all inputs. (sorry to ramble on).

My wife is very taken with a platinum (rhodium) slimline in turquoise TruStone that I made for her. I originally made her one in a designer style, but it was too heavy for her taste.

White and gold is always nice -- American Holly makes a nice pen, and Casein is gorgeous but if you really want to make it spiffy, you could do one in pre-ban Elephant Ivory. Smells terrible when you turn it, and you REALLY have to be careful with heat build-up or it will crack, but it sure makes for a one-of-a-kind gift.

You can change the slimline to a streamline.. that gives you just a little
extra room to show off your wood, yet not enough to make it feel clunky.
The centerband makes a nice change. Just make sure to look for a good
metal, as those kits are often low end plating.

It doesn't have to be as slim as a slimline...slightly thicker would be ok....I am thinking about having it engraved also.

Several of the tru-stones would make a really nice pen of any size. Turquoise, the green versions, either of the 2 pink versions. Personally, for a slimline, I'd use the centerband. A lot of people on the board recommend that you not use the centerband, but every time I've shown a slimline to a lady without the centerband (made from any material), they don't like it in comparison to a pen with the centerband. Just my experience. Just use a good plating, either TN or platinum/rhodium. Possibly even modify it and make a long desk pen.

BTW, why do you say that she would never use it? Is there some other type of pen that she would use? I guess I don't see the point of making a pen for someone who won't use it.

I'll second the pre-ban Elephant Ivory.......

Here's where you can get some: http://www.elephantivorytusks.com/ivory-pen-blank-round-small.html

They are having a sale now on the small round pen blanks......

Whatever you choose, I would have Ken laser engrave it with name, date and the nurse caduceus.
