I'm having an problem with the tailstock handwheel wearing excessively. It seems like the set-screw winds up grinding away the lip that hold the handwheel in the tailstock. Are either of you experiencing this?

I've replaced the handwheel once (under warranty) and this is a picture of the new one after three months use. I've talked to Griz, who has offered another replacement and suggested using some greese. I'm also loooking at having one made of Steel instead of the cast metal used.

Ok bare with me on this Mike. When I bought my lathe new I had to put it together and the tailstock was on the wrong side of the headstock and the handwheel was on the wrong side of the tailstock. I'm not insinuating yours is wrong or anything of the kind I'm just stating how mine was. I had to go look and see the part you are asking about on mine and happened to remember about putting it together. I haven't had a problem with mine. How is it wearing out like that? The only thing I could think of would be having it to tight. Did you adjust the setscrew before locking down the nut? If you did there shouldn't be any downward friction on the shaft that would wear it like it is. Maybe a picture of the whole tailstock would be nice.

I had to look at mine again and the handwheel will only go inside 1 way so another picture wont help. I don't use grease on mine and wouldn't think you would have to either. The setscrew tention is the only thing I can think of that might cause this.

I had a G0462 and had the exact same issue. I went through 2 or 3 handwheels before I upgraded to a PM3520b. Luckily Replacement parts from Grizzly aren't expensive.

it's not the tension on the set-screw as the wear is on the inside shoulder of the lip and the side of the set-screw. When you tighten the tailstock, the set-screw bears against the lib on the handwheel, that is where all the wear is taking place.

I'm going to try making a set-screw out of Delrin tonight and see if that slows it down till I can have a new handwheel made. Sad as it's the only part of the lathe that's disappointing.
