A woodworking friend bought his from Rockler. After seeing his work and signature, I bought one from them also.

We both bought the electric ones.

If I remember correctly, I think Amazon offers some that will take a cursive signature and make a brass/bronze stamp with your signature on it. that is somewhat more expensive, but if I decided to do another, I would go that route.

Here is one that will make a cursive signature line:

AS TO what to put in it: That is purely subjective and expressive of who you are. Hint - Listen to your wife. I only wanted my name, but my wife and daughters picked out the other parts that expressed what they saw in my work. I haven't used it as much as I thought I would - but that is because I waited too long to get it. Age creeps up and creations after 70 slows one down.

I don't have a suggestion for the iron but I personally wouldn't buy a cutting board that is branded. I use both sides.
It's interesting to "hear you say that"

I've seen a lot of people who brand the very bottom corner of the cutting surfaces of the boards they make. I've got mixed emotions on this because it's nice for people to be able to sign their work but I like to use the whole board as well.

My question is this... What about branding or laser engraving one of the edges of the board? Would that just look funky or does it solve the issue for everyone?

It is a subjective thing. I think a great made cutting board with a very nice branding iron logo on it would probably make me buy it as opposed to it being plain. If Mark May put his logo on top or bottom, I know I would buy his.

Well you open a question that is not easy to answer because you can not brand everything you make. some shapes are impossible such as kitchen tools. bottle openers birdhouse ornaments and other items like this. Now if all you make is cutting boards and maybe some bowls I would not use a branding iron I would step it up a notch and get these coins with you brand on them. A branding iron is a cheap way out and yes I use one but as I said I was scrollsawing for over 40 years and many of my items I can brand easily under the base or things like this. My birdhouse ornaments I would brand the box they came in. Just something to think about and I think a nice coin in the corner of a board is just fine. You see it but it says class to me.

What would keep you from using the branded side? It's a finished product.

I branded the one I used daily, and it hasn't changed in 3 years of daily use.

To answer the question, the missus created our logo using some simple design software like Canva, then we uploaded a jpeg of it to the maker who created a brass brand attached to rod and handle. I heat it via propane torch. Works great.

A friend's neighbor makes several cutting boards. He brands the edge of his. I made one and wanted to engrave it as well. I put a juice groove on both sides and engraved in the center of one side. Not that I'll ever use it but in case I do I have one side for use and the other to display. With the groove on both sides it looks like a cutting board either way.
