Went over to my local wood superstore for their 50% off on selected items Fall Clearance. First thing I did was to talk to the owner and ask what exactly is 50% off cuz it looks like only the usual suspects are marked. So he says Bree you can take 50% off all the exotic wood. We just want to get it out of here.

OK! That's what I wanted to hear. So I amble right over to the turning squares and burl section. I noticed that there were some new burls that they must have dragged out of a corner in the back room somewhere. I know the burls and wood they stock pretty much by heart!!

So I lift up this ugly looking burl and man oh man is it heavy. Sucker must have weighed 15 pounds. It is heavily waxed and it was impossible to tell what the heck is in there. I call my friend who works at the store over and said... I don't know how much this is or what kind of wood it is. We search and search for the tag to no avail. Then I find two more of these burls and on one we barely can make out "HRB" and what looks like the numbers 1 and 4.

So he looks it up... "Honduras Rosewood Burl". So I said, What is the price on it? He says well it must be 1.4 times $16 then less your 50%. I said are these other ones about the same? Yes. OK... I will suffer a lot of waste and loss on these but since you are trying to get stuff moved out I'll take them all so you can replace this junk with good new stuff!! (LOL) Maybe I can get a few nice pens out of them.

Here is the burl (The little saw off was not there. I sawed it off to allow passage through the bandsaw.)

I sawed the initial cut and lookie what was inside!!!

And this 14 pound baby is going to make a bunch of these...

And I have THREE of these big burls!!! Almost 50 pounds!! What a steal. LOL!!

Now where is this place in NY? I might take a ride up there. And by the way I say you :tongue::tongue::tongue::tongue::tongue::tongue::tongue::tongue::tongue::tongue::tongue: rasberries to you

She will sleep like a baby dreaming about the things she can make. And we all will have nightmares that we could not get a deal like that.

Nice deal Bree. Sure wish I could find a deal like that. What are you planning on making out of them?

I have been down in the shop turning a Sierra out of a stub from this burl. It just finished it and will take some PIX in the AM and share. I was going to cut all the burls into pen blanks. But my other half started talking about boxes because the pattern looked so nice. I could cut the main rectangular section into about 16-1/4" slabs and still have lots of material for pens on the brl that I am working on now. I could make some nice box tops or sides out of them.

At least one of them is going to pen blanks.
:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Let me be the first to say "You Suck!" :biggrin:

At least I am honest enough to admit that I am totally jealous! :smile-big:

LOL!!! It is even worse then that... much much worse!! I never told you about the two big chunks of Amboyna burl that I scored at 50% off or the 5 pound Camphor burl!! Or the two big chunks of Cocobolo and Myrtle!! Or the East Indian Rosewood at 1/2 off!! LOL!! I haven't even got those out of the bags yet.

And my haul from last week includes a nice medium bowl size block of Coffee burl from Indonesia. I can probably get 32 blanks out of that. A bunch of Mountain Laurel, Redheart, and E.I Rosewood turning squares as well as a big piece of Austrailian Myrtle burl!! I had to pay fuill price for all of these but I got pick of the litter as they called me before they put them out for the public.

Pays to be a good schmoozer!

So now I am swimming in premium exotic woods!! All I need is time to turn pens!! :redface::redface::redface:
:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

cool, when are you going to offer some up for sale? ;)

LOL!! I knew one of your guys was going to say something like that! One of these days I might share some of my good fortune. I have been thinking about it. You guys have shared a ton of knowledge with me so I kinda feel like I owe. Now do I owe my Honduran Rosewood Burl??? Now that's the question!!

Of course I am loaded with a LOT of other fabulous woods so I should be able to come up with something nice. I am really thinking more of giving some high quality stuff away... but with the ultimate destination being the moms of some of our fallen heros who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Maybe turn one for a Hero's Mom and keep one for yourself.

I have had that milling around in my head for awhile.
:wink::wink::wink:

Bree, with that wood, I would just use it for a focal point on a box. An Entire box of that may be too overpowering.

Oh, yeah, YOU DO SUCK, ya know.

Exactly my thought. I am thinking about slicing a few 1/4" slabs or even 1/8" veneers to bookmatch one of more box tops. Doing the whole box out of this burl would be cheesey.

I just love your public displays of affection!
:wink::wink::wink:

You got yourself quite a haul there, Bree. Congrats.

But dont'cha know that there are a lot of pen kits sitting around this group getting cold :rolleyes: . . . winters coming. 'twould be nice to offer something nice and cozy to keep them warm for the long winter, right? :wink:

Can't wait to see our pens from all those burls!

The first pen is done. But I have to go on a motorcycle ride so I will get PIX of it online when I return.

And yes... I know what you mean about those long winter days. Poor darlins in the shop with no pretty woods to turn.
:frown::frown::frown:

Eh Bree, next time your on a motorcycle ride why don't ya cross the bridge into Canada. Drive a few hrs south and show me some of that Burl in person. I just want to see it up close.

LOL!! You guys are smooth talkers!! I was planning to do an Iron Butt ride around Lake Ontario and Lake Erie in 24 hrs. But that wouldn't give us much time. And not sure the Canadian Border Patrol would be very happy about me bringing that exotic wood in! Or the US having me bring it back from Canada!!

Plus I would probably cross at Sarnia to avoid the insanity at Windsor and Downtown Motown. Just roar down 94 to 75. Try to cross at night using my Nexus card if possible.
:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

I milled about 3/4 of the one Honduran Rosewood burl I have been working on this morning. I still have 3-7/8" slabs to mill. I have scored about 15-7/8" x 7/8" x at least 5" full size blanks and 10 or 12 Sierra stubs. I also milled a 3.8 pound block of Amboyna burl into a mix of long cut and short cut blanks. The Amboyna was 24% wet so it went into the microwave and is now slow drying in the oven. The HRB was 7% so it's fine.

What a way to spend a vacation!!
:eek::eek::eek:

Wow, that was theft if I ever saw it. ;)

Good find- I wish I has a store in my area that still stocked burls, or at least for a decent price. There's only one place that I know of, and it's not cheap.

I'd love to see how a box using a bit of that would look!

I'm going to take at least one slab and resaw it for a box.

I just set one of the blanks up on the lathe to do a Jr. Gentleman with it. I am hoping that it will really be a pleaser!

But before I turn it, I am going to take a ride down to West Penn Hardwoods in the AM and see what I can find in a nice leisurely tour thru the warehouse. I have to stock up for winter.

I won't get any good deals but I may find some top quality blanks. At least I hope to.
