This arrived from Wisconsin yesterday along with the 1/2 log underneath. It is 16" in diameter (the burl) the log was said to be cherry. I noticed that this section is just below a crotch because the rays of the crotch are evident in the split wood.

Not sure how the heck I am going to mill this thing. I may have to put the riser on my Griz 14" bandsaw just to cut it. Enjoy the woodporn!

Bree,
What type of wood is that in the bottom right corner? I have a piece that looks like that I cut from a fallen tree, but don't know what it is... the bark looks similar with the horizontal lines.

If you can't cut it up, you could always send it to me and I will cut it up for ya!! Fair warning, my saw has a 3/4" kerf!! hehe

Bree ... Lucky you! If the bricks on the wall are regular size, then that appears to be a nice fat burl. If you have the whole burl I would suggest that you immediately cut it down the center following the center of the pith as closely as you can. Then make bowls out of each half, or one bowl and cut the other up into whatever you want.

You do use a bowl saver right? If you do not have one try to find someone near by that does and then you can have the bowls and pen blanks as well. Sure beats the heck out of turning that burl into useless sawdust.

Well I am not an expert at tree identification but I believe that the reddish, smooth bark tree at the lower right is a Wild or Sweet Cherry (Prunus Avium). You see them full of white flowers in the springtime. Quite different looking bark from the Black Cherry (Prunus Serotina) next to it huh!! Though actually the young Black Cherry trees exhibit a more smooth bark with pronounced lenticels like the Wild Cherries though more gray.

Here is a neat PIC of a Black Cherry with twin burls. See how similar they are to mine.

Do you mean a coring jig to core out multiple bowl blanks from one block of wood? NO!! I want one!! Any recommendations for a good one that will work well on my Delta 46-460 (12" max bowl size)

Ah! I think you are absolutely right! I was looking at it again and there's a tree in our neighbor's yard with the same bark. I remember it having the most beautiful blossoms on it for about a week or two a few months ago... then they all blew off into our driveway like snow.
I cut it up last night, it looks very different than the other cherry blanks that I have. Does it darken with time, or is it just because it's a different type?

Not sure... I don't work cherry that much. Most of what I have is Black Cherry so the Wild Cherry will be something new for me too. I suppose not knowing makes it more exciting!! You get the "wood rush" when something usual or unique emerges unexpectedly!

These videos are of a McNaughton unit. The unit is good, BUT, as you can see in the videos, there is nothing to catch the cut out blanks as they get free of the main bowl blank.

I am using the Bowlsaver from New Zealand and couldn't be happier. I believe I ordered it through Lee Valley. If you look at the picture i the following link you will see that this particular unit has a full metal plate that HOLDS your cutting blade and it also allows the cut out to NOT SPIN OFF and get damaged when it slams into the floor, the wall, whatever.

IF you get this unit I believe you will be very well off. Remember to always cut the tenon in the center of the blank before you cut anything else. DAMHIKT. I find it quite difficult to add the tenon afterwards for remounting on the lathe.

Also, the larger the tenon the better and the safer you will be. Just cut slowly and keep the kerf cleared out. I have my vacuum hose right at the kerf and it keeps everything quite clean for me.

If you have questions e-mail [see my profile] me and I'll be glad to discuss my use with my unit. So, far it has more than paid me back as I turn quite a few expensive burls ... but that is another story in itself.

As far as I know Black and Wild Cherry are one and the same.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prunus_serotina
It must be cherry as it has the same thick sapwood as cherry does. The bark looks like cherry to me as well.Nice score send it to me and I can mill it up what ever way you like.Victor

The Gean Cherry and the Black Cherry are different species. The young Wild Cherry trees have this reddish smooth bark with the horizontal lenticels. The Black Cherry trees are more gray and less smooth though they too can be smooth when young.

Google up Prunus Avium and you can see the differences,. between the two. There are a whole bunch of cherry varieties. The Japanese Cherry also has the smooth reddish bark when young. So the log standing at the bottom right could be one of those though it more likely an Avium. I am not 100% certain.

But the burl next to it is Black Cherry. That is known for a fact by the owner of the tree. I think you have to be careful working with the Wild Cherry as it may have some hazards involved with cyanide compounds in the bark orsomething like that. I need to read up on that before I fool with that log.

Bree, JimBlack ... I just looked up my records and found that I ordered my WoodCut Bowlsaver from Craft Supply and not Lee Valley like I posted earlier. I have not re-checked to see just who all carries the Bowlsaver now, but either Craft Supply or Lee Valley would both be excellent sources. I would call to see who has one in stock though as they can be difficult to get some times.

Here is the Craft Supply link: http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/cgi-bin/woodturners/dyna/dynaXVJ6SD?page_number=1

Hope this helps you all out.

Thx! That link didn't work but I think this is the one you wanted to send.

But it won't work for me since it has a 1" post and my Delta 46-460 has a 5/8" post. But others might want the link so I am posting it.

Bree,
Al kidding aside, if you cannot locate some turner near you, like Kurt Hertzog, you are more than welcome to send it out here, I will core it, and send it back, maybe with a nice piece of willow burl thrown in as well

Thx!! I have to figure out how to cut the darn thing!! I might take a crack at bandsawing it this weekend. I hope I can cut it without having to install the riser unit. I really need to buck up, get a 220V circuit and buy myself a bigger bandsaw designed for resawing... with a 1" or 1 1/4" carbide blade.
