Look at the dial indicator and magnetic base also -- cheap and allows handy way to check runout.

I need to learn how to thread my own parts. I kinda get the drift of this. the attachment you are talking about goes into the tailstock and you attach the die you want to use. I guess you then mount the piece to be threaded into a collet on the head stock and then do the external threading? Is that right?

To do pens, what size dies do I need?

also, how do you do the tap part, putting internal threads? Does it work the same way and will this item hold those as well or do you do it differently?

Thanks, gonna get one ordered as soon as I get home. Now the next question is for you tapping fans... is there a Tap holder, jig or fixture for the lathe?

Thanks for letting us know -- I just ordered one. My threading is always a little cockeyed when doing it by hand.
