Well, things are not slowing down much in life at the moment. Work, work, work. Home is busy as anyone with kiddos knows. And you guys are waiting patiently. Thanks.
To add more to life, I had an older car for sale and had it parked at a business about a mile from the house. Got a phone call from a guy that wanted to see it, so a few minutes later as I round the corner, I see a young man SITTING on my car! He hops off as I pull up, we look, he asks to test drive it. Never came back! Waited around for about 20 minutes and called the number that registered on my cell phone. Got a lady that said she didn't kow where he was. Called the police and filed a report and all that. Oddly enough I got a call the next day from a lady saying my car was in the middle of a busy street. Drove by but no car. Can't get any extra info to the cops until business hours tomorrow!
Not that concerned about the car, just the fact that it is harder to trust people than it should be.
Oh well, thanks for listening to my rant.

Man, Paul, that is about as strange a story as I have heard! I hope it works out for the best. Unfortunately, a large number of people in this old world aren't as honest as you are.

Sorry to hear about that Paul. [V]
You should be flattered he asked to take it for a drive. [:D]
Most of my clients just get their cars stolen without asking. I get about two clients a week, that have their cars stolen. It is so common here, police really don't even do nothing.

That should be part of the dumbest criminals report. The guy lives with whomever owns the phone number you have. The police can be at the house arresting someone in like 10 minutes with tha info. I'm surprised though that you never got his license or other collateral.

Sorry to hear about the car. Sounds like your police dept is more like Keystone cops. That dude would be chillin' behind bars if it were up to me... probably the lady at the house too as an accomplice. I'm sure the wait for the vise and press will be worth the wait.

Well, I just got back from lunch, stopped by the tow yard just for kicks on the way and low and behold, there is my car. It was impounded the day the lady told me it was in the street. And for a mere $166 I can have it back. Such a deal! I called the police to tell them where it was, they said when I get it back, to call them to file a found vehicle report so I don't get pulled over driving a stolen car! What a system!
As for the police, they took the number the guy called from and went to the area, an apartment complex, no car, no one answered the door. I hate that someone will get away with this, most likely, because I'm sure the 'others' involved will feign ignorance. Oh well, live and learn. My wife was glad I didn't go with the guy, especially now!

BTW, Gary, you made me laugh, and I would have posted that here anyway[:D] (It had to do with wanting to test drive a pen press)
Yeah, some system. I find it absurd that you have to pay to an impound fee for a car reported stolen. Just sell it from there, Paul.[}:)][;)]
This place has an impound auction every two weeks, but I don't think I could talk them into the money recieved for the car! I was only asking $650 for the car, and would have taken $500. Now that minus the $166 almost not worth the trouble, but still some $$ in my pocket.

Really hard to see the blessing in this huh? Hey... when you do get it back have the cops run the dog through it in case he stashed something in it and you don't get busted for it later on. Good luck!!

Just be glad you don't live in california. Out here if you let someone "test drive" your car and you don't specify how long they can drive it forever.

Got the car back this evening. Kind of neat story. One local news station does a consumer watch segment. I emailed the reporter that does it and asked if a report on what to watchout for and things to do in such a case would be useful. I got a return email, then phone call. She made a call to the towing outfit and they agreed to wave the charges!! They will get some good guy publicity in the story. I get to be interviewed later this week for the segment. Look out TV world[8D]

Hey that's going to take time away from those Very important pen presses that you are REALLY wanting to get done.---LOL
Glad you didn't have got the free tow bill Paul

Sorry to hear about your car problems! Hate to have that sort of paranoia here in OKC! It reinforces why I will take a little hit in the $ by trading in my cars instead of selling to individuals.[:(][xx(] Let us know when the segment airs and I will try to watch it.[:)] Glad that someone is following in Brad Edwards footsteps! (Great local OKC consumer advocate who passed away a short time ago.) We've been looking for a new car for the LOML and I see why they do everything but take a DNA sample before they let you test drive![xx(] Very glad to see you got you're car back!!! Kirk[8D]

Ya learn something new every day. Turns out my car was not listed as stolen, but embezzeled. Because I 'entrusted' my car to the individual to drive, therefore it was not stolen. SAYS WHO!! Matter of perspective, I recon. I guess DL and first born are now to be required to test drive anything I have for sale[:D]. Cash up front will suffice as well!

Paul, it was an aggravating time for you to be sure. I'm glad it seems to be turning out for the best. Just remember, it could be worse. You could be a low down dirtbag like the guy who drove it.

Glad to hear it worked out well for you. I had a bit of Car-Karma tonight. Got home and the wife's car wouldn't start. Hadn't been started in almost two weeks as we were on a semi-vacation... she at a conference in Las Vegas an me as the bag-boy/chauffer. Thought I'd take the battery back for warranty and was pleasantly surprised to see the receipt that it was bought 5 years ago. Guess I got my monies worth. Not too fun though when you are on 10 hours days. Got another battery and got it in and she is happy.

Wish there was some way you could post your tv interview so we could see it also. Take care!!

Paul, glad things worked out for you. Let me know when it will be on TV. Did you e-mail 4-on yor side? For those not in the OKC area thats our local NBC station.

Roy, I'm a News9 (local CBS) fan. Emailed the consumer watch reporter. I get to meet with her this morning

Four wheels, four doors[:p] That is what is suprising in a way, it is a 1984 Pontiac Parisienne 4 door. Looks like a Caprice or Impalla. Faded maroon paint, little ding on the passenger rear where I got rear ended on the highway going home one day (no one stopped, imagine that). Headliner is held up with staples, dash cracked, radio don't work unless you hold your mouth right and your left leg out the window. You know, a basic old hoopy work car[:D]
Paul,

Saw ya on the tube tonight, how come you weren,t holding a PH Designs Vise[:D]?

Guess I could have put one the car on as a hood ornament, and maybe another on the dash, or slid one down the antenae, even hang one from the mirror[:D]

Well, another strange turn of events. Got a phone call, same number as the guy that took the car on Saturday. Says, 'I'm not the guy that test drove your car, but I would like to buy it.' Wasn't going to answer the call when I saw the number. Turns out this guy helps others out to and from a local missoin, runs people to appointments, etc. The kid dissappeared the next day when they told him the police were looking for him and he hasn't seen him since. Anyway, this man's got the car, I got cash, and a copy of the signed and notorized title. Learned that one the hard way too. Had one car towed away a couple of days after selling it. Got a notice that it was impounded, left it there. Got a call that I owed for parking tickets from a car, after I sold it. the man at least believed me that it wasn't my car anymore. I think I will just drive my cars til the wheels fall off and take them to the scales, too expensive to sell them anymore.[:D]

Congrats on your fame and getting the car back. Test drives are simple to handle, just institute the policy of the guy selling the helicopter in Clear and Present Danger.

Q. How much is your helicopter?
A. 2 Million Dollars

Q. Can I test drive it?
A. Yes, just leave a deposit

Q. How much is the deposit?
A. 2 Million Dollars [:D][:D]

I agree, that's the first thing to do. But in this day and time, that could also get you hurt. It's a sick world out there and unfortunately we have to think in those terms. [V] I long for the days of growing up in a small town where we kept the doors unlocked, the windows open and "Put this down to my dad" was the only money I needed at the grocery store. "We'll bring the bottles back" also took care of deposits.
