Joining the group from upstate eastern New York. I have wanted to turn wood since before I was a teenager. Now 50 years later I got my first lathe From my wonderful wife. Totally fascinated by pen turning. Going to start out slow and learn how to make them properly.

Welcome to the penturners forum !
Where pen turning members from all across the world come to freely share what they've learned.

Check out the IAP libary here , good stuff there too .

Right back at you. Welcome to the site and that is a nice toy you have there but warn you keep the credit card handy. That is just the beginning but it will be a fun road to travel and one many of us have done so. Some of us got lost too so we just keep going in circles.:)

Welcome to IAP from Ohio!

I can relate to your intro story. Not as long a time period for me, but equally happy to finally enjoy this hobby.

Click the Chapters link on the home page of the American Association of Woodturners and enter the name of your state to look for AAW affiliated turning groups in your area. Ofteh they have regular meetings with demonstrations, people happy to let you "test drive" their tools and accessories, and maybe a sub-group on pen turning. There may also be a pen turning group withing this organization (IAP) in your area.

Will check that out.

Hey, welcome from Texas. Couple of words of advice: try to get your wife interested in your hobby, otherwise you may experience some grief when you need to make a purchase. Also, avoid Slimline pens and stick to single blanks requirements. For a newbie you will have much better success.

Welcome from SE TN. I started turning custom grips for fishing rods. Downhill from there. I recommend joining a turning club; locations are on www.woodturner.org. Used to live in Queens, NY. People don't realize the beauty of "upstate" New York.

I used to travel all over the country for work. This made me realize that the real upstate NY is one of the most beautiful areas in the country. Thanks for the advice. I have a local club I'll be joking after the first of the year. Pen turners meet weekly.

Hi Clark

welcome from the UK. Don't worry about those scary tales about keeping your credit card handy ! It's cheaper than Women !! ( and or men depending upon your gender ). 😇

Best advice is join a club, you get advice , often tools come up and others let you try theses before you buy and you meet other " unique" individuals 🤪
