I've finished a few bottle stoppers with lacquer, and it's been a bit smelly, but nothing to worry about...

I decided to use brush-on lacquer for a pine buffet that I built, and WOW does that stuff reek when you use a lot of it! Very shortly after starting, I was feeling a bit drunk, so I put on the respirator (should have had it on from the start) and opened all the windows in teh basement....

I thought that was sufficient, until my fiance came home! Apparently it permeated the whole house...so now we have fans going and windows open...lacquer seems to be a 'garage-only' finish, eh? Too bad I don't have a garage!! :)

Who wants to help me build a workshop? I think Curtis has a home-building business, doesn't he? How far is Texas from Kenora?

Not only is lacquer intoxicating, it ~could~ be explosive. Be sure pilot lights are out. Better yet, do it outside.

If you think lacquer stinks up the house, try pouring PR in your basement. That stuff reeks for days and gives me a headache. I have to pour it outside. My molds smell like PR for weeks after too.

Even though Alumilite doesn't have much of a smell, I still don't like the idea of having liquid plastic right under my nose, lol. Just cause you can't smell it don't mean it aint there.

Try spraying it in an enclosed area. it could very well land you in the hospital or worse. I was helping my brother in law when I was about 17. He was a pro so I never thought twice about what he was doing. turns out he is more interested in making money than being safe. nearly killed us both. never trust the pros.

Yikes! That stuff can coat the inside of your lungs causing you to suffocate. Bad...very bad.

and yet every time I bring a pen up for wifey's inspection, she sniffs it since she likes the smell of lacquer.
