I have a Jet mini and my friend has a Turncrafter VS. He got an extension bed for his birthday and after using his I was thinking I might like to buy one as well. Extension beds for the Jet minis run around $100. The extension beds for the Turncrafter are half that.

My question is this: Does anyone know if the extension bed for the Turncrafter will fit the Jet? I've read that people think the Jet and the Turncrafter lathes have almost identical beds. Is that true or just speculation? Or am I just better off coughing up some extra clams to get one made for Jet?

I can't say yea or nea on this question, but I would think that the Jet bed would be designed specifically for the lathe, as would the bed for the Turncraft. I have a Jet 1014 that is older and actually bought an extension for mine. When I got it home, I realized that my lathe wasn't pre-drilled for the bed extension and I would have to do it myself... my fear was that I would be off slightly and not have the ways on the bed perfectly level which could create problems, so ultimately I decided to return it and get my refund... I only use the little jet for pens, bottle stoppers and game calls..and such. Any thing longer, I'll use the new Jet 1442.
I guess with all these words, I'm saying your probably will be safer to buy the extension that is made for your lathe rather than trying to adapt something.

I did my jet extension awhile back. $75 sounds about right. free shipping....heavy sucker. It lined right up without any modification.

That alone was worth the additional money spent for the right one. If you need to modify it. Add in the cost of your time and then see how the clam difference narrows a bit.

I've been seeing the Jet extension for around $45-$50 lately.
I think I paid around $100 for mine, but I wasn't patient. I needed it NOW.

I agree with borrowing it to see how it lines up. It's only a couple of bolts.
Get a good level and a few shims when you try it. If there's any warp in the
new bed length, it can do strange things to your turnings.
