I have not had a whole lot of time to turn lately...plus it has been very hot...
But this is my first natural edge bowl.
I do not know what the wood is. I picked it up for $7.00 at the Woodcraft store last week. I did have a few problems, I used my screw chuck but the wood was so dry that it would come loose if I applied too much pressure or had a dig of any sorts...finally worked it to be able to get it in to the midi jaws so I could hollow it. I have not decided on a finish yet so it just has BLO at this point...the wife loves how it looks now and says I should keep it this way...we will see.
Comments and critiques are always welcome:)

That is what I was thinking to Scott. The wood was very grey and dry before the BLO...the color really came to life after I added it.

<br />HI Ed, I think it turned out great. I want to try a natural edge bowl some day. Call me so we can get together and do some turning ok.
Janet :)
Will do Janet as soon as work slows down a little...The real estate market is still going crazy and it has me running. Last week I listed 4 houses and each one had multiple offers within 24 hours![:0]

I agaree, it really looks like maple burl. I like the shape a lot and I think you did a great job overall. I also like the finish. I would probably wipe it with a thin coat of lacquer, but haven't done that over BLO yet.

A pretty piece...you really did good!

I also vote Maple burl on this but I am not sure. I like the finish as it is...but if you want it to shine more...a coat of tung oil will do it. Another option is Danish oil if you don't want it too shiny.

Looks like birdseye maple with some burl to me. Very nice job. A tip I learned from a member of my woodturning club. He made a faceplate from aluminum but now they can be purchased from Grizzly. Using hot glue he heats the plate with a propane torch and then puts it on the bottom of his bowl. Use gloves and wood sticks to hold, plate is hot. He claims you can't get the wood off with an act of Congress. Afterwards he just heats again and it pops off clean. No screws or screw holes.
