My wife recently got a laser engraver (Aufero) thinking I could engrave pens with it. Now a friend is actually asking me to do it. So ... Assuming I can figure out how to work it, when do I use it. After sanding but before CA, halfway through CA, or at the very end?

I put a thin layer of ca on first, which helps level the surface of the blank, then laser, then finish. I find this process very helpful, especially with woods that are porous.

If you want the finished engraving in something other than a burnt wood colour , do as Aces-High suggests , add colour , then re-finish .

Agree with Jason. I have had the best results apply two quick coats of thin, then lasering.

I have been wondering about this also. If you engrave before finishing how much work is it to fill the engraving with CA to get a smooth finish? If you do it after finishing doesn't that leave exposed wood and an edge on the finish that can wear or get damaged?
