I picked up some highly figured amboyna burl blanks on Etsy and I couldn't be happier with them. Just one issue: I don't think I own a pen kit that would do them justice! Does anyone have any suggestions for kits to pair with amboyna burl? So far I've looked into the Majestic Jr kits since I have the right drill bits to make them. The best looking blanks of the batch are pictured below:

Majestic Jr or full size. With the gold trim. Scream $300 pen. Guaranteed. I have some first class Hondorous burl rosewood that I want to do that with. My second favorite would be the Imperial gold from Dayacom. Always loved that kit.

Just my opinion here: i would buy an easily modified kit and i would try to remove as many components as possible (clips, rings, finials etx.)so that the wood would stand out.

Kate Harrow's Bullseye Turning's kits would fit that bill perfectly.

Personally, I would recommend the Emperor/Emperor Jr. kits. All the elegance you need is with this kit. The Majestic is nice, but the glass faux diamond ruins it for me.

I'm a big fan of the Diamond Knurl Rollerball kits from Ed and Dawn at Exotic Blanks. (Especially when made with a custom wooden cabochon / finial on top). They have a pretty basic style without a lot of embellishment, but then again, I'm a big fan of featuring the wood more so than the kit parts. Regardless of the kit you choose, I'm sure those blanks will make some gorgeous pens. - Dave

G'day mate. Here is an Amboyna Burl I made for my son using Jr Statesman II postable Fountain/ Rollerball Pen kit. He loves it. Here are some pictures so you could see what it looks like. I personally love the Jr Series Statesman and Aaron kits.

Cheers,
Sean

Barry is a gem. I've taken a few pen making classes with him at Arrowmont School for the Arts and have nothing but praise for his art. BTW, Barry sold Arizona Silhouette to Classic Nib a few years ago.

It's one of my favorite burls, I have bins and bins of it and I put it on any kit except a slimline.

There is a recent turning where I put it on a sewing scissor kit.

I would select something that gets the most out of that blank. I also like the diamond knurl that was posted earlier.

I don't mind using amboyna on the humble slimline. Some people love that size and with a better quality ink insert, they write pretty nicely. I made these three from the same piece: one all red, one mixed color, one from the all-white part. The all-white is pretty interesting, I think.

Can I ask what the better quality Inc insert is?
