Hello IAP Community:

There have been so many fantastic kit-less pens posted recently, but I am not quite ready to go there so as a baby step I would like to make a few closed end style pens using standard kits as raw materials.

So far I have done this with the Slimline Pro by converting it into a long desk pen. It worked out very well.

I have some Apollo kits along with the tools and stuff needed, but I haven't made any of them yet.

I have a pin chuck that can be used to make the cap of a Caballero a closed end although I haven't done this yet either.

Yesterday I received a pin chuck for 10.5mm tubes from Craft Supplies USA for use on Zen and Magnetic kits which I think will work very nicely as a closed end since the cap is magnetic and will continue to work on the tip/nib.

Have you made any other Kits into to closed end pens? I would really like to hear about them or see pictures of them to help me along this path.

Thank you and Best Regards,
Dave

I'm in the process of gathering a collet chuck and all the various bits needed to do some closed end pens. I think this is a good transition before kitless.

Of course Apollo is one and the Artemis as well from Bullseye Turning.

I realize I have posted this before, but the Atrax (shown in the video) is built on the same tubes as all the junior series, as well as the triton from Berea, and, of course the diamond knurl rollerball--so this technique (which requires NO special mandrels) will apply to ALL of them and many more that use 10.5 and 12.5 mm tubes.

Thanks Ed. I will have to try the procedure using an adjustable mandrel with a homemade spacer in lieu of a custom pin chuck. - Dave

Any kit can be made as a closed end pen (one end or both) without the use of special tooling. Here is a link to articles on making closed end pens that I wrote maybe 15 yrs ago.

Do a good turn daily!

Thanks for posting your articles Don. I would have never thought of using any type of expanding anchor. I'll definitely keep that trick in mind.

Careful Dave. I think I made three or four closed end pens and then I bought taps and dies 😅🤣🤣🤣.

Enjoy!!. I can't wait wait to see which kits and materials you choose.

The Atrax s a very good suggestion because it does not repost anyway. I'm a fan of the kit besides. Just ordered 10more (at half price ) yesterday. 🙂

I made some closed end pens using various 10.5 - 12.5mm tubes, Atrax, Vial and others. Most of them have interchangeable nibs for RB or FP. I turned down the center band a bit so that I could hide it under the wood. Hope it helps.

Beautiful pens. I keep thinking about trying closed end but not sure about what kits to try and what tools I need. However, this thread has helped and got the juices flowing again. All I need now is a working lathe. The speed control electronics went poof over a month ago. I am hoping that the new "expensive" board arrives today.
