Hello, this is sparked by Darios post about pocket knifes. I want to make a knife or two, i have looked a little on line only to find rather expensive kits. I want to make just some simple knifes before i try a really nice kit. Any suggestions on a supplier for the new knife maker??
Also any good how to sites would be great as well. Thanks, Victor

I just seen that WC is selling knife kits. I don't know anything about them, just saw them in the new catalog. Probably not the best, but for a first time maybe a little cheaper.

Try texasknife.com which is the website for Texas knifemakers suppy in Houston, Tx.
I have bought stuff from them for over 22 years and several ownere, like them.

I use http://www.jantzsupply.com/ for mine. Most of the knife suppliers are selling the same kits and jantz seems to have them a tad cheaper. I would suggest finding something that does NOT have pre-attached bolsters. Find something only wood for the handle... no bolsters or guards. Woodcraft's new kits look pretty interesting too but they don't sell sheaths for them.

Cav,

I missed those posts of yours and I am impressed! I have been planning on making some myself but thought I need a lot of other tools and equipment but maybe I am mistaken?

Do you know other sources that make various shape/size nickel silver bolsters?

Dario, it all depends on what you want to do to 'make' a knife. Most who call themselves knifemakers assemble kits and finish the knife. I don't wish to demean that as the work can be done sloppily or well. Here in Arkansas, we take pride in being the center of true knifemaking. There is a lot of history and many craftsmen who have carried it on. These makers either forge their own steel or shape by stock removal methods then make the slabs and do finishing. The amount of machinery you need is determined by what starting point you choose. e.g. are you going to buy finished blades or do you need to buy a forge?

Frank,

I totally understand you and if I do start making some knife, I will definitely start with a pre-made blade. Maybe from a kit or even one from an old knife.

If I find it is for me AND I can afford it, maybe I will progress to blacksmithing/forging but I personally doubt that. I will most likely put my own shape on the blade since I can't find my "style" on the kits.

BTW, knife making is like pen making to some degree, you can start from scratch, use kits or anything in between. Not all kits are created equal and your personal skill level can make even just a kit especial. ;)

Thanks.
