I am considering a Keurig single cup coffee maker.
Has anyone here had experience with these; good, bad, or whatever??

..At my job, we shop people were recently "banned" from partaking in the
office coffee. It is provided by the owners, but just happens to be in the front office kitchen.
We were always told it was for anyone, but..one supervisor, an A.R. kook, didn't want his guys (toolroom) in there, so my machining groups had to quit to keep the peace between departments.
Sounds like a daytime soap, huh?
Anyway, I'm about to go into the D.T's needing coffee, so I saw these and thought I might splurge and get one for my office.

Thanks in advance!

John,

My wife is a Keurig NUT!! She just upgraded to the top of the line because it is quieter.

The Keurig does a great job and it is super convenient but it does take a couple of minutes a cup. So it's not like pouring from a pot, someone is going to have to wait.

And if cost is a consideration, the Keurig falls to the bottom of most lists. My wife says that the single cup serving cost about a half a buck a cup (plus shipping if you order it like she does).

John,

There's a K-Cup at work, another in a waiting room at the local LASIK place, and another in the flight planning area of an airport I frequent.

In two words, they ROCK.

I am SERIOUSLY considering getting one for my home.... Never have to face another empty pot....

The one in the LASIK place's waiting room is going non-stop for many hours/day and it works like a charm. The one at work sees less use, but there are no problems with it.

One huge plus is that I can have my crazy dark brew, the next person can have decaf, and the next some fruity-nutty-pseudo-coffee - everyone is happy.

Cheers!

Gary

Thanks, just the kind of info I was after!!
I don't mind a couple minutes wait, a trip to the vending machine in the break room would take that long, but I refuse to drink cardboard flavored water, and pay for it too.
50 cents a cup is not bad. Starbucks is a couple bucks, but I got over the service at the one near my work.
Thank You!!

Thanks Gary!! Sounds like you have had a good experience with them.
I never run into them where I get out to..
but they don't let me out of the cellar much, LOL!

I'm almost convinced. Wally World has them , a B40 I think.
Needing coffee is making me feel like a junkie:coffee:, but I had a withdrawal headache today that made me nearly sick.

Thank You!!

We have one. Our only regret is that we didn't pop for the one that can be plumbed in. The water tank is kinda small so we have to refill it all the time and I'm a lazy SOB.

Get it, then buy a selection of different coffees and try them until you find one you like. Try them on different water levels too. We use the Newman's Own extra bold and it is great on the second-to-biggest brew setting but on the biggest setting it gets bitter.

The kids love to walk up and brew a cup of hot chocolate whenever they want it.

I bought one, used it for a week and then gave it away.

The K-cups give a weak cup of coffee, they're VERY expensive
and they aren't all that convenient to find.

I did some math and figured out that it was cheaper to buy a
cup at Starbucks and throw it away.

I have got a Senseo coffee pod brewing machine and I love it. The coffee comes in bags of 18 pods for about 4.50 (.25 a cup) I double them and make a big cup so 50 cents a cup for me.

It takes about 1 minute from the time you hit start to heat the water til the brewing is complete.

Thanks Greg, Plumbed in model..just checked it out; WHOA!
I hate to spend this kind of money on coffee maker, but I gotta have
some decent coffe at work. Hate cleaning pot type ones.
Sounds like you like your coffee too!

Thanks!!

Thanks Charlie, I have read some online reviews, and saw a few with your issue; weak brew. Maybe a splash of av gas would help?:drink:
My wife reports the K cups are easily found where she shops, and since I essentially don't do stores, I'll take her word.
I really like Starbucks, but the bold brew I have a taste for causes me to get a bit wired, and edgy..not pretty! Plus, it was a hassle with the store
not opening on time, and waiting on brew once inside. Soooo..

Seriously, though, thanks for your input! I appreciate it.

I've had a Keurig for a year and a half now, and love the convenience for my morning cup as I'm getting ready to hit the road to the office. I use the Newman's bold, bought in the 80 pack size at costco or Sams for about $33- helps keep the cost down. I normally only use it during the week, and use the drip maker for a full pot on weekend mornings. Unlike Greg, I do use the biggest cup setting- guess I like my coffee like I like my women........... bitter. Oh, and the kids love it because they can use the single serving hot chocolate k-cups, and my wife uses it for a variety of teas.....

Thanks, Dan. I saw those Senseo also. Just wasn't sure if they were as hassle free as the K cups..I like simple and that caught my eye.
I'm the classic "hunter" shopper.. find product, drag it home.
I figured if I got the keurig at Wal Mart, I could return/exchange if defective,
and I've seen a few reports of that happening. Online shopping would require mailing back. Not good.
Price sounds pretty good on your cup of coffee, though!

Thank you!!

Thanks Lyle. I take it yours works ok also. Good to know!
Ok, 80 pack, price is getting better. Looks more inviting.
And as for the liking coffee like the women..>chuckle<.

Thanks for your input!!

Wow, I thought CA had high cost of living. Our K-cups run about $0.50 per cup at the "normal store" pricing. But we are lucky that our flavor is one of the ones that Costco carries in their big boxes and that makes them even cheaper. If they are weak, cut down on the brew size and it gets stronger (and smoother) and is still less than a buck a cup if you double it up. You should also try the different flavors because some are much weaker than others.

Thanks! Wow, 5 of them is a strong statement that you really like them!!
And 5 shots at getting a bad one, with no trouble. GOOD!
Kind of a long drive to Africa, but I guess if you got good coffee there..

Thanks for the report!!

Lyle..Hot chocolate and tea..neat!

I am probably going to do it this weekend, and will report back if I don't get too wired testing the different brews! MMMM..COFFEE!

THANKS TO ALL!!!
What a fantastic group.:)

The wife and I were at Costco this weekend and they have the model that brews 4 different sizes. It was selling for $139. From what I have seen this is a great price for the higher end machine. We have been toying around with getting one for the house, but they don't have one that brews the gallon size yet:yawn:!!!

Wow, that IS a good price for the big model!
4 cup sizes, hehe I would get lost; gotta remember user is needing coffe at the point of making said coffee.
I'm looking at the smaller ones at walmart or target, I think the wife said they do 2 sizes.
I hear ya on the gallon size.. some days i think a drip I.V. would be my style!

Thanks for the input!!

My dentist friend has one and loves it!
While the price/operating cost seems steep at first, everytime I make a full pot (both at work and home) I never know how many will be partaking. I end up dumping more down the drain most days! That and being able to choose individual flavors .... well, I think you may have started something.:)

Hey John,We use a Brita water filter for our coffee. The water here is not that great. You can tell that the coffee taste better if it has been filtered. Also the machine does not scale up as fast. That is with a drip pot.The filtered water might help on the one you are wanting. Todd

This is the one thing that you have to think about. If you are a heavy coffee drinker the K-cups are not for you. The only people I have talked to that did not like it are the people that make a pot first thing in the morning, have 2 or 3 cups before leaving and then fill a thermos with the rest. I know of 5 people that did not like them. That number now includes Charlie (newlondon).
I have had a B60 (speceil edition) at my office for 3 years. I have had a b40 (elite) at home for about 2 years. A buddy of mine has 3 b60's (home, office, gf) and bought a b155 to upgrade his home one. They are great in my opinion. I would get the Elite if I was to get another. You can set it to turn on and off and set the temp of the water and have 3 cup sizes.
You can get the coffee from a few places and if you buy 4-6 boxed depending on the company (coffee cow, alpine coffee and coffee wiz just to name a few) you get free shipping.
I am not a big coffee drinker. Some time I will have 1 to 2 coffees a day for a couple months then I wont drink coffee for a few months. The coffee dont go bad they are all vac packed and good for a long time so you dont have to drink stale coffee. Also if you like flavored coffee, like to change it up or have people that like different coffee flavors in the house or office they are great. Once in a while the coffee filter will have a rip and once I had a k-cup with no filter at all. The cup of coffee will cost between .30 and .60 depending on the coffee and where you get it. Watch the cup counts on boxes in the stores they sell a lot of 17-18 cup boxes and when you order it the boxes are 24-25 and 50 on the very common ones. Also if you want to buy big cans of your normal coffee you can also buy a reusable filter for $10.

Hope this helps you.

Johnny;

I have had one for two years and love it. The selection and options continue to grow and the price, if bought on line, of the K-cups comes in at about $.35 per cup which saves me about 50% from the donut shop

John,
Ibought one of these for my girlfriend about two years ago and she still loves it. I work with several people that also swear by them. I don't think you can go wrong with one.

Johnny it is worth it's weight in gold as far my wife and I are concerned and we really aren't coffee drinkers, we sure seem to run a lot of water through ours.

Some of the coffees and teas are not very good, but most are excellent. Easy to make, fast, and definitely convenient.

I would highly recommend it to anyone, and I can think of at least 10 different people who have bought them after seeing it work and tasting the coffee at our house. The contractor who did our kitchen this past summer about drank his fees in coffee! *LOL*

You can get a single cup reusable screen cup to put your own coffee in. I use this and add three scoops instead of the normal two scoops. Makes a good strong cup of coffee. The only problem I have had with it is that it build up scale due to my hard water. I have a filter system for the water but still get a buildup. Followed the descaling instructions repeatedly. White vinegar by the gallons. Found a powder that worked much better. Do a search for one of the coffee bbs and read about them. Lots of interesting information on some of the coffee bbs. Heck I did not even know that there were coffee chat sites.

Bottom line is that unless your water is a major problem like mine you will be very happy. I have to say that the machine is fine but my water makes it a little bit of a challenge. Still I would buy it again.

My wife reports the K cups are easily found where she shops, and since I essentially don't do stores, I'll take her word.

I remember looking over the setup to try and figure out why I wasn't
getting the cup I liked, and it came down to timing.

The color, bitter oils, flavor, aroma and body all come out of the coffee
grounds at different times in the brew. And it seems that the K-cup
system defeats this critical timing.

I just made a pot of coffee with K cups a few minutes ago. (one seasonal
flavor is only available in leftover K-cups this time of year) What would
have made two weak (and somewhat bitter) cups of coffee with the
Keurig machine made 4 cups of good coffee in a regular drip coffee maker.
So it isn't the coffee ..it's the system. The way it is designed, it defeats
the process of making good coffee.

Is it terrible? No. Just wasn't for me. Plus, living in a somewhat remote
area, I can't just go pick up what I want at the market. If you can, that
helps a lot. But they're around $15-$18 for a 24 pack here.

We have the standard ol' coffee make in the kitchen...but my son had one of the Senseo... for the amount of coffee he drank, worked great for him..(his wife doesn't drink coffee)... I tried a cup at his house and thought it made good coffee... I've cut my coffee consumption to one or two cups in the morning and nothing the rest of the day.... when I was working, I had a cup of coffee sitting on my desk for 10 to 14 hours a day... even had one of those little warmer pads to keep it hot.

Costco -- Not the top of the line, but they sell the brewer and about as good a price as I have found (for a limited selection) of k cups. Not cheap, but fast and easy.

Tucson has Newmans Best Bold - Juneau Costco carries Tully Extra Bold French Roast. For only one coffee drinker in the house, most practical.

I want to thank everyone for their time in posting and kindly sharing your knowledge
about the coffe makers.
I took the plunge and had my wife get one for me at Walmart. It is different, for sure.
Had a few samples already and so far, I think it wil be a good choice.
Got the B40, by the way. I think this will be fine for work.
Now, off to shop the selection of K cups.
By the way, the Keurig purchase was the reason for my replacing the water filter on fridge today, needing good water for the coffee maker..
Some of you may find that story amusing.. I may at a later date.

Anyway, Thanks my friends!!

Not to HiJack Johnny's post but this is appropriate to his post and funny..
All this talk about the coffee maker, we got up this morning, LOML made a pot of coffee and it perked and perked and perked but never filled the carafe.. ours has a clock on the front and a timer all those bells and whistles... it steamed up the inside of the clock, and just kept on perking... finally shut it off and discovered a joint where the water disperse tube was suppose go into the coffee filter and wet the grounds was broken and no way to fix it.. not sure I want to put epoxy or CA in my coffee maker...
We went to Wally world in Madisonville to get another today, I'm thinking there must have been some kind of gremlin going through the county.... WW was out of coffee makers (in our price range - we could have gotten all kinds at $60-$140... not in our budget)... we asked a clerk if any in the back and just not stocked.... the display that LOML liked wasn't price marked and somebody in the back said it was $51.95 but they were out?????
So we got back in the car and headed to Maryville where the "big" Walmart is... we watched at least half dozen people there picking up coffee makers.. go figure that..
two WW's and everyone is getting coffee makers??
We picked up the one LOML saw in Madisonville that was supposed to be $51.95 for $21.95...

I have two Jura Capresso fully automatic expresso machines. One at home and one at work. I drink LOTS of coffee every day.

The pod-type of machines are really expensive to operate, but cheap to buy. My units were expensive ($600~$900) to buy but far less expensive to operate because it will grind whatever kind of beans I want to put in it.

Plus, my coffee is as good or better than Starbucks. I never go there any more in fact.

Of course, I really like high-end stuff and these coffee machines are amazing. They burr grind the beans and filter the water for each 8 oz cup, steam-pressure the grounds like an expresso machine and clean out the grounds for the next cup. I dump out the "coffee pucks" every four or five days that it produces.

Johnny,
We have had a Keurig for about three years now.... Actually on our 2nd one as we wore the first one out (didn't descale it as recommended), but they replaced if free..... There is a "My K-cup" availabel which allows you to use regular coffee in it. It comes with a holder and two washable filters. We actually have 6 filters now since the we are hard on the holders... I don't want a regular coffee maker anymore!!

I got one for my birthday this year and like it a lot. If you buy the k-cups at costco, in the pack of 108, you can get the cost down to around $.42 a cup.

We ave the special edition at home and love it. Also have the single cup at work and think it is ok but takes a few minutes to make a single cup of coffee.

I drink a lot of coffee.... so much so in fact, I roast my own beans.
Here is a system that you can reuse the k-cups to make coffee real cheap:
http://www.my-kap.com
You can also make your own pods to go into the Keurig with this:
http://perfectpodmaker.com/
The pods and the holster can be purchased from:
http://www.coffeegiant.com/categories/PodAccessories

I have both systems and they help to make coffee brewed in the keurig real cheap!
