I couldn't resist playing with the PR over the weekend. I'm trying to
decide what to do for the PITH and trying things out to see if it gets
the creative gears moving.

Mostly, I was just having fun.

ps, no special effects on the MilkyWay .. the starts just showed up
in the photo. It's an interesting blank to turn, as the glitter looks like it
is standing still as the lathe moves. I guess it's a strobe effect as the light
only hits the glitter at a certain position. But there's a definite 3-D effect
to it, it's a little dizzying to watch the blank spinning on the lathe. It looks
much deeper than it really is, sort of like those 3-D puzzles you stare at
and then suddenly see a picture that looks 6 inches deep.

Those look really great Charlie. It's a perfect outer space simulation. What's the white specks and larger green specks in the blank..I know it's glitter, but what kind? What's the blank size coming out of that square mold?

The individual mold has both 5" and 5.25 inch blanks.

I think the specks only change size according to how the light hits the glitter.
There's several colors in there ,but I'm having a hard time finding 'fine' glitter.
And I just checked four stores on the way into the shop this morning, nobody
seems to carry glitter.. just 'glitter glue' which I don't want. I want the glitter
suspended in the resin instead of glued to the tubes. What glitter I DID find was
all red or silver ,and rather large particles.

Fred.. OF COURSE I've been sniffing the PR! Why else would I have thought
this was such a great idea?

I'm hoping to take a few slices and do some segmenting..

glitter powder

Check on ebay for glitter powder or go to the beauty supply stores for micro glitter in dozens of colors.
Mark

Thanks, Mark. I actually have a little from a beauty supplier left. But until
you actually have it in your hand, it's hard to tell how fine it is.. so I was
hoping to pick it up locally. Even what I saw on the shelf looked fine until
I looked up really close.
Ah well .. that's the price of living in the sticks..

I have some micro fine glitter, it's almost like powder.

Micheal's has something they call micro fine in a pack with 8 colors I think.

yeah.. I did the dollar stores .. big white glitter and big red glitter. That was it.
I think that what I used here did come from Michaels way back when.. but the
nearest one to me is 110 miles. JoAnn Fabrics is only 30 miles, but the little tiny
tubes in the sample pack are about $3. I think Michaels was a little less, but not
much. Tiny envelopes with about 1/4 tsp in them. But the glitter looks good.

I never quite got around to pens though.. did some cleaning in the shop. Greenmtnguy
came over and pitched right in. Gotta get ready for guests next month..

He went home with a few blanks though..maybe he'll get one done before I do.

Yeah Jim .. too much fun!

I've always loved the Milky Way . . . especially when I can SEE the stars sparkle.

That looks like the nicest one I've seen in years. I love them. Can't wait to see the pens.

Ah well .. let's just say that they make better blanks than pens. :frown:

By the time you get down to the tube, most of the glitter is gone in
the ResinSaver blanks. For the regular blanks, I think they'll look fine for
something tubeless and THICK. Once you thin out the resin layer, it looks
like dirty wax..

ugh!

Yep.. interesting effect spinning it on the lathe. WHen it's slow, the sparkles move.
Turn it fast and they stay still, but definitely higher or lower than each other.

Still not through playing.. got some ideas about how to get the resin closer to the
tube without actually gluing it to the tube. Probably double cast it.

Also, if anyone is looking for acrylic paints for short money, JoAnn Fabrics has a
sale on 2 ounce bottles for $0.39 ea. I grabbed a bunch, but I don't know how they
will work for painting the inside of the tubes. I've read people are using Testors but
it is expensive. So I'll try this out and see how it works..

Coastal Scents....again

It would seem that Coastal Scents also offers glitter, including something they refer to as glitter powder, which, I'd guess was the really fine stuff.

Here's hoping.

Sam

Mine is .. although at first I didn't get it from them. But comparing them side by
side, they're the same. The colored silver one is called hologram silver, I think. The
super fine stuff is 0.004" which is pretty fine for glitter. The larger glitter particles
don't look as good.
