The Woodturning Design Spring Issue has a nice tutorial called "Piano Pen for the Music Lover" by Barry Gross. It is pretty simple, but gives a complete description of the Kallenshaan Woods Piano Kit that Ken Nelson produces. The issue also has the second part of the "Pen Photography - No Ultra-Expnsive Quipment Requred" article by Richard Kleinhenz. I enjoyed both articles.

No offense meant to the writers, but a magazine that prints "how to" articles on assembling straight forward kits is in deep trouble. That's not content, that's filler. Each of Ken's kits comes with detailed instructions. Even I can make them.

I agree Lou. I took it as them attempting to be responsive to the pen-turning community (many of the IAP members subscribe, or at least purchase one or two issues a year); hopefully some more informative articles will be submitted soon.

At least they are printing something... I have not been able to find a magazine that truly caters to pen turners. My hope is they will continue to move forward and upward. By the way, the magazine's articles are written by readers. It would be nice to see more advanced pen turners sending in articles. Hint, hint... [:)] (P.S. This is not meant as an attack. I subscribe to the magazine and would love the pen articles to improve)

Didn't somebody already do an article for the "Piano Pen" kit in another magazine? It seems to me that I remember Scott Greaves being associated with it.

I know it's not always perfect, but IMHO .... Woodturning Design is the best woodturning magazine around. (OK, so the woodturned notebook cover wasn't the most practical of ideas).

Hi Russ,

Yes, I did an article in More Woodturning on the Piano Pen in a Sierra. The pen turned out very nice, and I get lots of comments on it (not so many comments on the article!!! [8D]).

I just finished reading the Woodturning Design last night, and brought it in to work to loan to some people who I thought might like the articles. Barry's article on the Piano Pen was good. Whether it's a kit pen or not, Barry writes well, and answers questions many penmakers have about doing one of Ken's kits. I find it valid because pens made from Ken's kits do sell well for people. I'm glad this site is not all just about how difficult a pen is to make. Yes, yes, yes, the piano pen is like gluing tinker-toys together - very basic, but some people want to know that it is simple before they cough up that amount of money.

There is a lot of expertise on making pens at this site. I would suggest that more people might try writing articles and submit them for publication. I know More Woodturning has a monthly column on penturning, because I wrote it for over two years, and now Don Ward (its_virgil) writes it! As penturners, I suggest you support publications that support our craft, by subscribing to them! Sign up for Woodturning Design, sign up for More Woodturning, and join the AAW and get the American Woodturner! And then write that article about that cool pen you made, and submit it! Use that skill you have acquired, and pass it on to other pen makers coming up through the ranks!

OK, you got me going there! It is easy to take pot-shots at these magazines, but it is more difficult, and rewarding, to contribute to their quest for excellence! As always, I would offer any assistance I can give to anyone who decides they want to write about penturning!

Scott.

Hi Scott, I subscribe to the woodturner design magazine and love it, but do you think you can direct me to your article to do the piano pen? I know Ken sell the kit but would love to try myself before I recieved the spring issue ( not have much spare time nut would love to try ) . Tanks

I also read the spring issue cover-to-cover and agree that it is a good magazine. There are times I wish it had some different articles but I'm not writing them so I'm happy to see what's in there. Of the magazines out there it has the most practical articles. I don't always agree with the methods and sometimes I think I have a better way to do it, but that doesn't mean I still don't learn something.

I also belong to AAW and get their magazine. I enjoy the turning part of it and learn a lot, but most of the gallery stuff is more woodcarving than turning to me.

A magazine does not happen accidently. They cannnot publish what they do not have.

My advice to anyone who complains about a magazine or its articles - get up off your lazy butt and write the articles you want.

Don't think you can do that? If you can write a coherent message on this forum, you can write an article for a magazine. And now, Scott has offered to help.

I will be waiting to see some different authors in the future issues.

russ I like your inputs[:)] and I usually dont make many comments as you can see by only a few posts, it sounds like your pointing out that more than one person did the piano pen is that what changed your tone, please dont take this as being negative because it is not ment to be. by the way thanks for your web page and help you post.[:D]
