Ha!!! I would Dan, but all the Pastors at our church have my pens already!! If I find myself in PA...look in the offering bowl for blanks!!

How funny would that be. The guys who count are like, offering was $2000 and 2 little wood blocks.

More on topic, do you turn a lot of buckeye pens?

If you think there's a chance they won't know what to do with the "Little Wood Blocks" in your home town send them my way. I'm an usher at our church and I'll know how to put them to good use. I'll even post a before and after weight, although I don't think that's the weight edstreet was asking for. Ha Ha

By chance do you have the before and after weight of the batches?

Good question Ed. Having done about 5 gallons of casting and for some reason, the same size blanks...I have done measurements in the past, but not lately. The typical gain, going by the book as far as stabilizing procedure is about 3/10 oz. To quantify that, these are .75x.75x4" blanks...about Sierra size. I use a standard kitchen scale from Target so my measurements are suspect!! But from a subjective standpoint...myself and others, you can feel the difference in weight by hand. I have more to do next week with access to a very precise scale and would be happy to make time/temp, size/shape, before/after measurements.

Ha!!! That would be fun Dan!! Yes, I do...both gray and golden...I love the stuff and have a few good sources for it. Makes great bullet pens and the voids are great for filling opportunities!! Did a couple last month with big occlusions...turquoise powder fit right in! I used it on another and it would have benefited from yellow Pearl-ex rather than turquoise.

Ed...Just so we can have some empirical data...I took photos of the blanks on the scale, as a group and individuals. It'll be a day or two...but I'll record the Rh, temp, and time of day for the process when I stabilize them, as done today...50% @54.

They do Chris!! Fact is...there are many things that can be used to fill based on several factors. Once done though...that's usually it...no second chances. A good eye toward blending and what other colors are in the blank make a big difference!

Here a is a Buckeye Burl Pen I recently did for a pen swap else where:

Ed asked if I'd done a weight pre/post on the buckeye burl. I hadn't...but neither had I finished them all! I had 4 left so here are the dimensions and weights of the blanks pre and post:

Blank 1 - start wt 23g, finish 49g dimensions 7/8 x 7/8 x 4.5
Blank 2 - 14g, 30g, 3/4 x 13/16 x 2.125
Blank 3 - 23g, 53g, 7/8 x 7/8 x 4.5
Blank 4 - 22g, 41g, 13/16 x 3/4 x 4.5

You can see a dramatic gain in weight!!! At least double in all but one blank. I have measured in oz before, but since pen blanks are small, I changed to grams so a difference can be noted.
I can't answer everything, but I'll help where I can and Curtis will add his expertise if I screw up to bad!

blank #4 is approx 6g shy of where it should be. 6g sounds light but put into perspective that's 2.21g per cubic inch. It is also likely that blank #4 contains more heartwood and much more dense than blank 1,2 and 3. Even then that does not fully equate to the shift we see in blank #3 so like it's more than just heartwood at play.

Also Blank #3 soaked up more resin than the rest so that blank will turn slightly different than blank 1 and 2 but not that far different. Going out on a limb here blank #3 likely has some softer spots that are less dense than what blank #1 and #2 has internally, things like sapwood perhaps.

Could very well be...especially #4. Overall, very happy with how they came out. I have plenty more to do so I'll keep making notes.

In fact I do!! I have the "before" shots when I weighed them. I have to email them to myself from my phone then I can post them.

These are the before pics on the scale.
