Hi all

After reading the post on the Jack Daniels barrels as a source for pen blank oak I was thinking to myself. I am a scotsman living in scotland where they make REAL whisky. with at least one distillery on my doorstep.

So I took a little walk down to the distillery to try and buy some barrel staves. I walk in and the head cooper calls me by name. He remembered me from years ago when I pounded the beat as a police officer. So after a little conversation and telling him what I was looking for I walked away with a dozen barrel staves for a price that any Scotsman would love (ie. free) and the offer of more whenever I need it.

Needless to say his pen, made from the wood that he works with, is now finished and will be on his desk tomorrow as a thank you.

The Oak turns and finishes beutifully

Great gloat Hugh, there is a massive bonded warehouse quarter of a mile from my house, used to be called DCL (United Distillers) and there is another in Alloa belonging to the same company.

Cannot remember the new name though, used to go there regular with the fire engine when their AFA went off!

I used to (Many Maaaaaaany years ago) work in Ballantynes distillery in Dumbarton. I was stacking barrels for storage.
I remember one day when they decided to fill a vat with whisky from the barrels. to do this they line up about 50 barrels over a trough with the bung side up. They then remove all the bungs and turn the barrels so that the bung is now down. All the whisky flows into the trough and then into the vat.of course once its started theres no way to stop it.

Works great until you discover that the vat you have just tried to fill wasnt empty in the first place, so 28,000 gallons of whisky ended up all over the floor. We simply swept it down the drains and it poured into the river.

Its enough to make grown men weep [:D][:D][:D][:D]

That distilery is gone to a new location in the town but I blagged my barrel staves from Loch lomond distillery ( even more selling points).[8D][8D][8D]

That all sounds well and good, but keep the blanks out of your mouth. I recently made a pen out of a tobacco stick (a piece of heart pine that was used 50+ years ago to dry tobacco leaves).

After making the pen, I had the strange, irresistable craving to turn a pack a day of them.

Walking _to_ the distillery wouldn't be a problem,
walking back home however, may pose a problem [:D][}:)][:p]

<br />And how many complimentary shots did you get to sample? I'd be in too much trouble if I could walk to a distillery.[:p]

That would explain why I caught so many fish on peanuts that day and Goody powders the next day.
