I get lots of junk for business owners. This one MAY help members who may be presently unemployed or job hunting.

From a Human Resource newsletter that is sent to my email, hope it helps someone!

HR focusing less on job boards, more on Facebook

Despite smaller budgets, many companies are still hiring. How are they searching for employees?
Most are spending more time on social networking sites and less money on job boards like CareerBuilder and Monster, according to a recent survey by Jobvite, a recruiting software provider.
Of the 440 HR pros who responded, 72% said their company will invest more in recruiting through social networks this year. Meanwhile, more than half expect to spend less on job boards.
What online tools are getting the most use? The most popular social networks for recruiters and HR pros:

  • Linkedin (used by 80% of those who responded)
  • Twitter (42%)
  • Facebook (36%)
  • Jobster (17%)
  • Myspace (13%).
Other traditional, low-cost methods are getting more attention in this economy as well — for example, 68% of companies said they plan to increase the use of employee referrals.

Yup. And keep in mind that hiring managers are looking at your stuff online too. If you're applying to work in a church, and you're a member of the Satanist Brigade on fb, they'll find it.

I have been trying to convince the kids at the school that posting their life on Facebook is a bad idea. If I am looking to hire someone, I am going to be thorough in checking them out and I want to know if they are out drinking and getting high. Some of the "harmless" things that are posted about you on those sites can have a devastating effect on your future.

I have an account with Facebook but didn't give out much info on my profile page. I did it mainly to keep an internet eye on my oldest granddaughter. If you tell her, I will deny it :tongue:

Yep... Facebook is a GREAT friend and family site to keep a little more in touch.

However, make sure you are aware of your privacy settings.

I personally don't like myspace.

And linked in is good too but Eds %s above show that you should keep that strictly business.

And above all.... The web has a REALLY long memory and it can be hard to erase.

I've basically grown up with the internet being the 'youngster' that I am, so I recognize how powerful these sites are. Even things like listing items for sale on Craigslist instead of paying to put a classified ad in the newspaper....it's changing the way things are done. But yeah, posting pictures of you getting plastered on the weekends is not helping your job hunting...of course on Facebook your friends and upload pictures of you and tag you in them, so if you are getting plastered on the weekends it'll probably end up on there whether you put them there or not! I'm on LinkedIn, Facebook, not myspace (used to be), Twitter (rarely), Virginia Tech networking site, Technorati, and a few others I think I've forgotten about! It's an online world these days and I don't think there's any going back.

when I worked in HR for a consulting company I used facebook to get an "up close" look at the people I phone interviewed. Sure made life a little easier, since sometimes that is the only contact we had with potential employees. However, you need to take what is posted there with a grain of salt, sometimes we all need to act a little

Some bosses regularly check facebook. I'm suprised my work doesn't do it. If it did, half the work force would be in trouble! Seems they spend all day on there. I update from my blackberry, so it's not a big deal for me, but others play poker and stuff on facebook. Great way to get caught wasting company resources and get fired.

I do the Websense admin here, and facebook.com is the #2 bandwidth consumer, second only to our own website.

I'm seriously considering blocking it. We (a church) don't have a fb ministry, and so there's no business/church reason to go there.

That's the best part..it used to be blocked, but I'm guessing the IT gals want to play too, so they unblocked it.
