I was wondering if any one else was having this issue? It seems to get hot on the head stock upper portion, where the flat cast iron area is. It does not get super hot, but hot enough to be uncomfortable when resting a hand or arm on it for more then a few seconds, is this normal? Is there a place to purchase bearings and are they hard to install. Thanks to all who reply.

Exactly what mine did. I was worried about bearings and all kinds of possibilities. About that time I tried to turn a small bowl. I went into the head stock and changed the belt to a slower fitting. I turned out the bowl and changed the belt back to a fast setting. To my surprise it did not heat up for several months. When it started getting hot again I changed the belt to make another bowl. When changed back again, it remained cool for several months. For some reason, changing the belt position seems to help the overheating problem. Why it works or if that does it, I don't know. Give it a try, maybe it will work for you.

Yes, this problem has been reported before; but not frequently. And no, it is not normal.

How old is your lathe? If it is still under warranty, you will be able to get free replacement bearings from JET.

If you need them, bearings are available from local bearing supply businesses(check the yellow pages) or from the Internet. This subject was just vivited recently. Use the IAP search function and plug in "bearings" and you will find the thread an a number of recommended sources.

One guy who had the problem reported that he solved it by loosening the handwheel on the HS spindle just a little.

Replacing the bearings on the mini is pretty easy.....an hours work or less.....and there is a turotial in the IAP library that should help.

Good luck!!

Just curious but how old is your Jet and what model number are you referring to? Maybe I'm fortunate but I don't seem to have that problem with my Jet mini & Lord knows, I push it to it's limit. By the way, looks like we are neighbors, I live just a few miles north of you. Let me know how things work out & hope its a simple/easy inexpensive fix... good luck!

My 1014 was doing this too, but since I've changed the bearings I haven't noticed it.

To join the thread; Metal lathes have an adjustment called "bearing pre-load" it means that you squeeze the bearings until they are just turning with *NO* lateral play. These bearings are tapered roller bearings, not ball bearings. Did you grease the bearings? The best grease is called "Red n' Tacky No. 2" and sold in auto parts stores.

PS. Is there a PDF file of the users manual for the 1014????? Just to prove that I do talk to myself, I found it online at:
