I'll be arriving in Jacksonville on the evening of 3/28 and will be there until the morning of 4/2. My days are filled up but I hope to have evenings free. Can anyone advise what is worth seeing while I'm there? Restaurant recommendations?

Just a short distnce south of Jacksonville is St. Augustine, the oldest city in the U.S. There is a historic section that dates back to the days of the Spanish rule.
I have never spent anytime in Jacksonville, so can't make any suggestions.

The whole Jacksonville Beach (near the Sea Turtle) is an "open air" market kinda place as there are lots of resort hotels nearby. All the restaurants and shops I visited in this area were great and they used to have a lot of "free" live entertainment, but I haven't been down there since the economy went South.

Downtown Jax is the "Riverwalk" area. Look for my footsteps (they'll be the snow-lined ones) from the week before.

(Visiting my parents 3-19 and 20)

Some of my favorites are Roy's (Jax Beach), Bistro AIX (San Marco area), Dwight's Mediterranean Bistro (Jax Beach area).

The St. John's TownCenter has too many good restaurants to list.

Ed, a little bird told me about your visit. I was also told you would be visiting the Riverside Arts Market. I look forward to your visit. dennisg

Jacksonville is the largest City in the Nation (Square Miles) Let us know where you will be staying and I can make a recommendation or two. PM me if you like a phone number and we can chat.

I suspect the bird in question has grey hair!!

Also would be my "travel coordinator" while I am in Jax, so probably a good source of info.

Culhane's is a GREAT Irish Pub. The sisters always take good care of you...There is also a Woodcraft here. I'm one of the managers, stop in and visit!!

From a natives perspective, the beaches attributed to Jacksonville are 3 separate incorporated cities. Jacksonville beach at the south end of the barrier island, Neptune Beach in the middle and Atlantic Beach at the north end (the Sea Turtle is in Atlantic Beach).

At the end of I-10(the Atlantic Ocean) locally known as Atlantic Blvd, is the Sea Turtle and a small block of restaraunts and pubs. Atlantic Blvd, is the dividing line between Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach. So for a block north and south of Atlantic and Ocean there are a small community of shops and such, including Pete's Bar which was used in a John Grisham novel. Then in Jacksonville Beach (3 miles south) they have a more lively district of shops, bars and small restaraunts.

Just off the beaches is Ft Caroline, historic preserve which has the reconstruction of the French Ft Caroline. North of Jacksonville in Fernandina Beach there is Ft Clinch. South in St Augustine the oldest continually lived in city in America there is the Castillo de San Marcos, plus the thriving "Old City". Just a bit farther south is Matanzas (The place of Death), part of the spanish settlements and fortifications of the new world.

If it is still going on, there is the Artwalk on the riverwalk in DownTown Jacksonville. There are numerous art galleries. The Jags may have started spring training, and if they have started play yet there is the minor league Jacksonville Suns.

Most of the old family run seafood restaraunts(that my father and later I grew up with) are now gone. The names have been bought but the food isn't the same.

Christophers Seafood is very good. St Johns Seafood is also good, they have 5 or 6 locations.

Of course we have a Woodcraft. I'm sure Billy, Mike, Frank, Dennis, Bob, Bill, Ed, and any of the other locals can tell you more places. You may want to post your questions in the NE Florida chapter forum.

A couple of our favorite restaurants in that general area are Clark's Fishcamp off Julington Creek and the
Outback Crab Shack at Six Mile Marina off SR 13 -- Some of the best fresh seafood I've ever eaten was had at Joe's OCS.
Saltwater Cowboy's off Dondanville Rd south of St Augustine off A1A is purty good.
It's got a view that can't be beat.
And, I'm about 1-1/4 hours southwest of Jacksonville, south of Gainesville and halfway to Ocala.
Make your way over here, and we'll grill some steaks.

Cheers,
G

Thanks Dennis. PM sent.

Thanks to all who have replied. Looks like I'll at least be visiting a few Irish pubs and a Woodcraft:biggrin:. Gary, I love a good steak and appreciate the offer. I'll just have to see how my schedule actually pans out.

Thanks again to everyone!
