i've taken an apprentice and his training will begin tomorrow night. i'm going to start his woodturning experience out with penturning and ritualistic hazing. i like to start with the basics (beating him with roughing gouges and licking the grinder wheels clean while running). i am also thinking of sanding and finishing him but probably not on the first night.

his name used to be Chip. please keep him in your thoughts as he enters training.

ryan and jeff are fine (though never seriously considered as canidates). i did consider beth (new sales associate showing great promise), but in the end chose someone who has never used a lathe. reteaching can be such a pain you know. yes, you can come and watch. someone to take pictures and use the stopwatch as he holds the lathe at arms length sure would be helpful.

ROTFL, I thought this was a joke [:p][:D] What are the chances of you getting an apprentice named CHIP, I hope his last name isn't OUT!!!!!!!!

his name WAS chip. now he is to be known simply as "apprentice". should he complete the traning i shall give him a new name. i don't know what that name is now. it will be determined by what he shows me during his training which is a long and intense process sometimes taking years to complete. i am so very excited about tonight. i think i will buy him a gift today. perhaps a new flog.

Man, "apprentice" is going to be a long name to remember when he breaks something. Maybe you should name him "hey you". I could have put a few other colorful names instead, but don't want banned [:p].

What's your professional opinion Doc?

My opinion is that if this apprentice is nice looking, then I definitely need to come watch. My opinion is also that it's always nice to see a man being trained well... though it would probably be slightly better if the trainer were a woman, but then I know Fritz has a very feminine side to him...[:X][:X]

So Fritz, what is the poor fella's name now, if it's no longer Chip?

Here's my new apprentice, hasn't learned much turning yet but does a good job of grabbing those wood scraps off the floor [;)]

Is this unusual? [}:)][:D][}:)] I've lost quite a bit of blood this way

my apprentice will gain a name in time. his first lesson went very well. i showed him a lathe and had him ponder the meaning of wood as he cleaned my shop. (i forgot to look at how much curly honduran maahogany we have, but i know we have some).
