Hey all,
The rehab hospital has sent me home, I guess I was showing up the other patients too much.

Let me recap the events of the last 2 weeks. On Jan 31 (Sun), I was cleaning off the snow and ice from the roof since water was leaking though the ceiling, light fixtures, ceiling fans and heating ducts. After working on it for several hours, my foot slipped and went over the edge before I could regain my balance. I remember the fall (there was no pain at all) but can't remember anything about the landing (the pain probably is causing my brain to block it out).

I spent about 6 hours in the hospital in Jonesboro undergoing multiple x-rays and the doctor placed the ball of the hip joint back into what was left of the socket. They then sent me by ambulance to the trauma center in Memphis where more x-rays, MRIs and CT scans were done.

By Monday afternoon, the doctors had drilled a hole through my leg to drive a traction pin through it and placed my leg in light traction in order to keep the hip joint from dislocating again and getting more damage.

By Tuesday afternoon the surgical team put the multiple pieces of the socket back in place using glue, plates and screws. So I now have a small hardware store in my hip. Good thing I don't travel by air.

Wednesday morning they had me using a walker to take a few steps (actually very few) and to sit in a chair. After about 30 minutes I felt like passing out so they put me back in the bed.

On Thursday I was able to walk abour 50 ft using the walker and had no trouble sitting in the chair. Since I could walk that far they said that I no longer needed to be in the hospital. So, they sent me home on Friday afternoon and tried to get me into a rehab hospital in Jonesboro.

The paperwork couldn't be completed in time so I was admitted into the rehab hospital on Saturday morning. I met with the physical and occupational therapists for an introductory visit on Sunday.

On Monday through Thursday I had 4 or 5 45 minutes therapy sessions each day. Near the beginning of Thursday the therapists discussions during their conference determined that I was ready to go home and continue with outpatient therapy. So, I went home Friday and tomorrow is my first outpatient therapy session.

According to the orthopedic doctors, it will be about 3 months before I can put full weight on my left leg. I don't know when I will be able to drive or do any serious work in my shop.

It will take me awhile to catch up on being offline for over 2 weeks.

If ANYONE says "no picture it didn't happen" will personally receive a picture of the incision site with the 27 staples still in place. Watch what you say if you don't want to receive that picture.

I want to thank Ed and Andrew for taking care of the posts needed for the prizes I am donating and the discout that I am offering. I also want to thank those who called and those who offered prayers on my behalf.

Paul,

Glad to hear you are back home and getting better. Being at home sure helped my recovery.

Please dont hesitate to pm if you need anything.

AND if no pi........... nah I believe I dont need to see.

James

That sounds like a nasty spill. I've known several people go through rehab, and it always sounds like something I hope I never face. I hope you have a full recovery soon.

Paul, glad you are well on the road to recovery. Do what the doc's say, and stay off the roof for a while.

I would, but the hoe and shovel are still up on the roof. The rake came down with me. Uhm, actually under me which could have been really bad if I had let go of it before hitting the ground.

BTW, I just found out I can't send pics through PM or forum email so I will have to post it here as soon as I can get to the basement to get the USB adapter and crop/resize the pic.

Paul, I wish I had known. You tend to miss a lot on this site when you have to work the hours I do. (only ed has that much time). I'm sorry about your mishap. With my knees the way they are I would have sent the wife out there to do that. I hope you come out better than you were before.

First I am glad that you are home and on the mend. That really got my attention because i will be up on the roof removeing snow today. luckily for me we have three or four feet of snow in the front yard to act as a cushion. I just hope I don't need it.
Take your time and get better you will be in my thoughts. Especially while i am on the roof.

So glad to hear your home! Sending off some great energy for healing to continue fast and you get back to 110%! Welcome back to IAP home too!

Glad to hear you are on your way to recovery!

Any idea who your ER doc was in Jonesboro? I have a cousin that works the ER there.

The doctor who reduced my hip in Jonesboro was Dr Swymn. He did his residency at The Med in Memphis, which is where he sent me for the surgery. My followup care will be with Dr Swymn.

Gotta do it! No Pic, didnt happen! LOL

Im glad you are getting better and if you need anything, please dont hesitate to ask.

OK, Brian,
You asked for it. Here is a picture of the surgical site with the 27 staples.

Paul,
Just reading this made my hip hurt...
You know a fall never hurts... it's that sudden and abrupt stop that's the killer....
glad you're on the mend.. keep up the good work, pay attention to the therapist and before you know it, you'll be back...

Scary story! I still have a bum knee from a very minor fall off of a ladder so I can only imagine how nasty your fall was. I'm glad that you were not hurt even more seriously and that you're on the mend.

Take care and please keep us posted on your progress.

Jim Smith

Paul. It was good speaking with you, I do wish I'd gotten to visit you while you were in Memphis, but glad you're doing so well, the PT is the hard part, keep it up.

32 ft/sec squared!
Goes by in an instant doesn't it!
Been there .... have the scar to prove it (wrist) I was 24 feet up when the bottom fell out. Luckily I was young at the time (in my 20's) and had a little bit o' tigger in me

A hip is a much harder one, I think.
Glad to hear your home and on the mend!

Paul: Glad to hear you are back home. Welcome to the world of hip replacements. Just make sure you follow your therapy requirements and recovery will be faster. Hope you have a very speedy recovery.

Glad to hear you are on the mend. Acetabular fractures(that's the name for your hip socket) can be pretty nasty. Hope everything heals up and you don't get nasty post-traumatic arthritis.

I grew up in Jonesboro, and my mother still lives there. Nice little town.

Paul,
Just read your post. Must be going around. I just got dismissed from Rehab this past Thursday after living in the Rehab Facility since December 10. Start out patient rehab this week. Glad you are on the mend. Take your time and heal up proper before you start jumping fences!

Actually, the doctors didn't REPLACE anything, they just REBUILT the socket using the original broken pieces, plates, screws and a bit of cadaver bone. That is why I can't put any weight on the leg until the bone heals.

Glad you are doing well! I don't think about those that have fallen off roofs the same anymore. I know a few that have and mostly walked away. My dad rode a ladder down once and messed up his ankled.
Then I had a friend fall off a ladder while roofing his house and landed on the driveway. He never regained consciousness(sp) and passed away a few days later. Count your blessings!

Paul, good luck. I hope you heal well. I am on my third operation. The ankle is not healing. Next June I am in hopes that we can replace the ankle completely. Everything I do in my studio while making pens is on a chair. I scoot back and forth between counters and equipment.
