The official opening of TheWoodMall.com, that is :D

I know many of you have gone and looked at the site, but I know it will be different tomorrow with lots of good wood to buy. A number of our respected vendors here, as well as other sources, will be listing items in the next several days, and I am sure that there will be more and more added as the word gets out more.

If you are not familiar will the concept of the site, here it is in a nutshell: it will be like eBay for woodworkers - without a lot of the fees and with a number of added resources just for woodworkers. Of course any of the IAP family is free to contact me directly about any concerns, suggestions, comments, whatever! I still will be out of serious penturning for a while due to expenses, but I will be actively involved with the IAP and TWM.

If you feel it is a worthy idea, drop a few comments on other forums, at your local woodworking club, etc.

If you have any comments or questions, I would love to hear them. :D

I haven't seen anything yet, but I'm already excited. It sounds like a great idea. While I like ebay, I hate wading through all the categories to find what I want. There is an idea, maybe put things in a structure like this forum does. I think IAP is extremely well organized.

Hey Al - my tech guys are getting the SSL encryption online right now. Everything should be done by tonight. Apart from that, your login information is encrypted automatically through my software, and the SSL creates a secure "tunnel" for the information going between your computer and the server. The SSL encryption that I am having installed now is like a second layer of security.

UPDATE: SSL certification now active. Registration, login, and the Member's Area are all secured through SSL.

Johnnie - you can browse all you want, but in order to buy or sell, you have to create a login. I don't ask for any information beyond the basics needed for a legitimate transaction, and I don't even use credit cards in any way, shape or form; therefore, you don't need a credit card or bank acct. to register. I will in no way use your registration information for any reason.

Good questions, any more? I hope I fully answered both of your questions. Please PM or post again if you have further comments.

Further question by Lee (Firefyter-emt) - "Joel, can you look at the post I just put up and tell me if everything looks ok? What fees will be needed for the post? Is it when listed, when sold??"

Lee, fees are only applied after a successful sale (unless,
of course, it is featured or something like that, in which case you have front-side fees) and I will bill once per month (at the end of the month). Fees will be paid through PayPal as one transaction.

Looks like a nice site, Joel! Is there a way to increase the type size for my lousy eyesight? (I have Firefox default set to 24 point, but it does not increase the size at TheWoodMall.)

Chris

Thanks, Chris. Unfortunately the browsers don't "recognize" how to make the text larger because it is running through a PHP script, but you can (at least with IE 7.0, and I think with Mozilla) set a ZOOM on your browser. This isn't quite as convenient, but it should get the job done.

So it is open now - give the vendors a few days to list and check back. By the way, Eagle will be placing the occasional blank he makes on there, too :D

Thanks, Joel. That works for me. :)

Had a quick look and it looks promising.

One quick observation though, I know the greenback has been on a slippery slide against quite a few other currencies, but there is a distinct problem with your currency converter.

It converted $US2.10 to $A1.04, it isn't quite that bad yet!

Thanks for the feedback; I am glad to see how I can improve things. I am addressing the currency issue right now, and I will address the scripting error as soon as I have fixed the other. As far as the partially encrypted pages - the relevant information is running through encryption, but the tabs and outside links and everything are not. I am checking into full encryption (which would not make a practical difference, but it would keep that annoying message from popping up).

I just had a senior level programmer at Microsoft (who, by the way, has legally hacked Barnesandnoble.com and Amazon.com to find loopholes) test my site for loopholes or leaks and found none. If you feel there is cause for concern with anything, contact me directly and I'll take care of it.

Again, thanks for the input. Give the site a few weeks to come up to full speed and I think it will do well. :D

UPDATE: Currency conversion is fixed. Frm_check error is isolated and most likely caused by a minor time-zone discrepancy - does not affect registration process and if it pops up again, I'll have a better idea of what caused it and modify the code to fix it.

Question . . . I love the classifieds in IAP. I'd hate to see our IAP classifieds move away from IAP. I'm also wondering if they'll be charging the same price at The Wood Mall as in IAP? Just curious. :D

Hey Al,
You know, I would hate to see that too - really. I am in no way trying to displace or replace the classified forums.
TWM offers a more streamlined listing and selling process than the forums do, just because they are forums. I hope that TWM can be a supplement for our vendors. Beyond that, I envision this going beyond just penturning supplies. I hope for it to encompass every aspect of woodworking. Only 1/3 of the site traffic thus far has been IAP traffic, and the IAP is the only forum I have discussed it on. I hope maybe our vendors can get additional traffic to see their supplies.

No, not the same price =) But listing is free and you are only charged if your listing(s) sell. So there is no risk in listing on TWM as well as in the forums or any other venue of choice. Final auction fees are only 2.5% and 4%. One guy actually told me I won't make any money because they are too low. Maybe not, but I want to provide a better alternative than eBay!

Joel,
Just one more feedback - for now.. If an item is put into 2 sub-categories it double counts on the mail category (see the woodworking tools right now).
