I live in the phoenix area and we got hit with some good storms. There are many trees down and on the way home from work I saw a tree cut up on the side of the road. It is very heavy and looks like it but I have very little experience with it. Can anyone tell me if this is ironwood?
Thanks

"Hit with some good storms", lucky bugger. It looks like Ironwood, can't tell for sure. My address is ......................... just to be sure :biggrin:

If you can pick it up with out help it's not Iron Wood.
Could be but can't tell, could be Mesquite. Either way nice find.
Iron Wood bark is usually more grey.

I am headed to Tucson next week and would love to find some of that there --- Looks like Acacia from the photos as a couple of the locals have noted. The good news is that acacia turns nicely -- hard stuff that needs the obligatory sharp tools and will cut better than a scrape. I was taught to cut it through the pith to releive the stresses, and usually do that to get maximum depth on one side if the pith is not centered. Coat the ends (usually use anchorseal) and proceed. Some great bowl, box, and pen opportunities for FOG wood (found on the ground). Great score!!!!!
