Alright, I posted a posting on Friday about a burl a buddy at work got for me. I spent the whole weekend excited to see it. So, I got it this morning at 4am. Naturally I was excited, but couldn't really see it very well as it was dark. He told me he thought it was oak, but I went out at lunch with another guy to show him and got a better look at it. I think it is Maple. I need your guys' help on this. It looked nice when I got it, but had already started to check a minute bit from sitting in the sun in his truck bed over the weekend. I got it home today and tried to beat the rain cutting it up, but couldn't. I managed to slice off a 1" piece to cut the checks off and sealed both sides of that in hopes to get some pen blanks. Then, since it was pouring rain, I rolled it into the shed and sealed the side I cut until I can cut it up, which will probably be this coming Sunday when I get back from Vegas (stealth gloat). I think it will be fine until then. Once I took that slice off, some new color showed some life and I was quite excited. Like, giddy school girl excited lol.

He pulled up to the guy and asked about the wood. They told him to take as much as he wanted because they were sweating up a storm trying to cut it up lol. I guess it was about 3x this size, but they had already managed to get rid of the rest last week. Oh well, I can't be that mad, right?

Anyhow, here are the pics, some with a yard stick, some without. I bet this weighs 120lbs or so.

Laying down bark side up. About 24" across at it's widest.

The large end. This is where I sliced off the piece.

Here it is "standing" up. As you can see a little over 24" tall. This side doesn't look like it was cut, but more split off.

Here is a pic of the most "normal" bark looking aspect that I got. I am hoping it can be identified by the wood itself, but I figured I'd get this shot on here just in case.

Definitely maple. Very nice score, and they really check fast in sunlight. Get the ends coated and keep it in the shade with just a little air movement to keep it from getting mold problems.

Congrats!

Looks like a nice piece of Maple burl to me. Take your time cutting it up and it should yield a slew of fine blanks.
