So I'm thinking of a casting project with pr that would involve casting several items, including common salt( specifically large coarse salt, like that on pretzels). It'll be a few days before I have time to try this but in the meantime has anyone tried casting salt?

Good luck turning salt crystals ---

It will cast, but then what -- it will not cut with any normal tools and will chip out.

(take a look a the crystal properties of salt)

In addition to what has been posted above the other problem, will be moisture content in/om the salt. Since it has an affinity for moisture, it will absorb it out of the air. And then cause problems with the resin.

I don't have any pictures, but I recently cast coarse sea salt in PR to turn a salt grinder. It worked great, but required VERY frequent sharpening and a tighter fitting respirator.

Take thin easy cuts to keep it from shattering. I had the best success with a scraper. I also finishing it in wipe on poly.

I might suggest, considering the mention of it not being friendly to CA, you cast it, turn it undersized, and then cast it again, so the outer layer is salt free. It will solve the problem of trying to finish a pen with exposed salt, but it's gonna require 2 castings...

sorry guys, I should have been more specific. I'm going to be gluing the salt and other objects to the tubes then just doing clear PR over it.

Thanks for the responses.:)
