I found all of these pieces made of Ironwood at the GoodWill at different times. I had planned to cut them up but so far I have not had the heart. A couple of pieces actually say Ironwood on the bottoms. They are very heavy. I have also found several other types of wood items, palmwood, olivewood, cocobolo, even a pair of ebony candlesticks large enough to use for other items. Then there are those funky 70's clocks sometimes made of a nice slice of burl! Of course there are other more common woods to be found, like walnut, teak, monkey pod, and fiddleback maple. Did you know you can make a pepper mill out of an old fiddleback maple rolling pin?! Now that is recycling!
So don't rule out the GoodWill for wood!

Those are some great find Alice. If you don't have the heart to cut them up, send them my way, I'll take the pain out.

Hey Goodwill and Habitat for humanity are two of my favorite shopping spots... I picked up a microwave and toaster oven at the local habitat store for only $20 for both of them.... haven't used the toaster yet, but the microwave is a primary tool for drying small pieces of wood.

Haven't picked up wood but once.. don't know what it was but looked like mahogany and about the right sizes for pens...

Alice,
Great find. There are more and more thrift stores popping up, and with the economy in the crapper those are the places to go. I find some different things there as well. As for those pieces you have I hear the band saw calling. I saw what you did to that poor old bowling ball.....
