Hi ya all. A friend, sort of a friend any who, is on vacation some where in Arizona. He ran across this big piece of Iron wood and its 86 pounds and roughly 18" wide by 18" to 20" long, roughly any who. If you have ever seen Iron wood in its rough cut state you know what I mean. Any who, its 86 pounds and I need to get it shipped from someplace in Arizona to Canon City Colorado, and as cheap as possible. I checked at the UPS store here and was told it would roughly be some where around $80 minimum to over $100. There has got to be a cheaper way to ship it. I don't care how long it takes just as long as it gets here. Thirty years ago or so I'd just have him ship it on the Continental Trails Ways bus. Back then I had a lot of things shipped that way. Everything from a new Battery for my car in the winter time from Canon City to Grand Junction Colorado when mine had froze and broke, to a rear end differential for my Datsun 260 Z shipped from Canon City down to Amarillo. I even had a set of studded snow tires shipped on the Bus from Canon City down to Duncan Oklahoma. But these days they don't even have a stop in Canon City Colorado.
I can buy the block for $35 plus the shipping. Here's some pictures of it. I have never had my hands on any thing like this but from the price of pen blanks of Iron wood I figure it should be a good deal. Oh, the friend of mine that found it for me is flying back and pretty soon too. I'm not sure of the date and I already asked him if he could box it up and check it as baggage and he didn't think that they would let him do that.
So, any suggestions out there? And check out the pictures he sent me and tell me if its worth it in the first place.
Thanks ya all.

He may be able to get greyhound to carry it. Otherwise, it's too heavy for USPS, and UPS says $65 from Pheonix (guessing) to you at 90 lbs. FedEx is slightly cheaper at $60.

Shipping by Bus

Does Greyhound go through Canon City? They might do freight shipping too, and a lot cheaper than UPS!

I'm not real 100% sure but I don't think that there has been any Bus comp. Greyhound or any of the others, stop here in several years. The last time I helped somebody catch a bus I had to take him to Pueblo. at the MacDonald's on hwy 50, to catch the bus to Vegas. And that was back in 1996 or 97.
I'm not even sure if any of them still take freight packages like they used to.

I have used UPS to ship large logs. It was about 1 dollar per pound. It was an 89 pound log. Call UPS and asked them. As for it being worth it. I think this wood goes for about 2 to 3 dollars per blank so I would say you can pay for it and then have a lot of extra to play with.

Greyhound won't be having any of it. Your going to need to call one of the furniture movers you can piggyback on some shipment going thru your town. I'd say close to 75 maybe a hunnert would get it there. Look in your yellow pages, they are all connected via the internet these days. Just like the auto parts junk yards do. Good Luck. I wouldn't cut it just so's it fits a shipping box though.

Here's a thought, have it milled and shipped via flat rate box USPS, sell off some of the blanks here on IAP I know I would buy a dozen or so to cover the cost.

Thinking about this some more.... If you got the man to go to home depot, picked up a sturdy nylon web strapping and made a loop or two and a Handle off of that. Going through those two airports. I wouldn't imagine would cause too much a ruckus. I've carried computer servers as big as that on many occasions. It's a pain I know, but if the man is willing to carry. That would be your best shot in the time frame your looking at. Just another thought.

I don't know where in AZ your DI is, but you might check for forwarding companies in the area and see if they can consolidate the piece with one of their shipments into the Colorado area nearest you.... you may have to drive to their corresponding agent's office to pick it up..

I don't know how much experience you have with DI but you won't get an incredible amount of blanks out of the log. Along with the cracks you do see there are alot you don't see including pockets of sand and voids. The easiest way would be split it into 40 pound chunks and then it should be able to ship ups for around 25 or so each. Either way you're looking at about 80 to 100 dollars to ship it and buy it.

Thank y'all for all the suggestions and comments. I'm going to see if there's a bus stop in Pueblo or Colorado Springs that has a depot. Then see about shipping it that way. And there's still DHL shipping. I know they take big packages cuz that's how my brother in Sparks Nevada sent me his old Dell OptiPlex GX240 computer. That monitor has to be about 50 pounds and both box's were about two foot sq.
If I get it and can cut it down without too much trouble I'll sell some of it on here to y'all.

I'm still hankering on the idea that this is a tourist trap and they've sold this wood a dozen times already!)
