I've been reading the neat sticky topic by Curtis about the cool access to IAP for "i" devices. I have been hinting for a while to my Wife that an iPad would be a nice thing to have. Usually she just tells me that I have way too many toys as it is, and to forget about it. But with my birthday and our anniversary coming up within the next week, I found her shopping iPads last night on the internet!

So, who has iPads here?

Do you like it? What all do you use it for? What are your favorite apps?

Being a tool fanatic, I am of course leaning towards the 64 gb 3g model. What do you suggest? Is the 3g a waste?

Any suggestions or advice would be welcome!

Scott.

btw, just so you know I'm on safe ground here, I've already bought her anniversary gift, an nice Citizen EcoDrive watch (since that's what I've caught her looking at on Ebay lately!).

Hi Scott

I have one and I love it. It's the 16G wi-fi. I use it mostly at home and on travel where I have wireless access. I use my iPhone for areas where I have no wireless. I like the Kindle app, WeatherBug, and the Amazon app. I don't find the ForumRunner app much use on the iPad - I just use Safari to get to the regular web site. I love it on my iPhone though.

Bought my wife an ipad for her birthday. I might even give it back to her!
Great little device, bunch of free apps to download, books, etc.
On a trip tomorrow and have 4 books loaded to read. So safari to surf web and iap. I got the 32g wi-fi. Even have a few drawing and paint programs, plus a photo editor. It works for me.

I went big and bought the 64 gig wi-fi version. Couldn't really see when I would use the 3 G so didn't opt for that. As others have stated it is a great piece of technology. I do want to get some kind of case for it but haven't figured out what yet. Sometimes it is tough to get it away from my better half though.

I agree with Alfred on this one. I have the 64g 3G and love it. Great for showing off photos, accessing the Internet, reading emails, etc etc. Tons of apps with new coming out daily. Many of the appsmare free and most others only costing a few dollars. The graphics capabilities are amazing. My main purpose for purchasing was for Internet access at our weekend cabin. The 3G access was our cheapest method. Our grandkids love it also. My biggest complaint would be the lack of easy printing capabilities and lack of multitasking. Both of those issues I think are being addressed in the os4 upgrade coming out in a couple of months.

I have a 32 gig non 3G and I only use wi-fi. I don't like extra bills, so I refused to pay for the 3G. I travel a lot on business and have loved it and don't have to remove it from my bag for flight security/TSA. I have several apps, but use Internet and email the most and use the apps sporadically, although I do have a few neat ones and have not paid for an app yet. I loaded 3 books and about 10 movies on it by downloading them from my Netflix subscription when I traveled to Egypt earlier this summer, plus it has about 200 songs on it...so the middle of the road has been good for me, memory size wise. Movies and Internet worked great even overseas.

The best part... I can browse and reply to IAP posts, while relaxing at night without having to sit in front of the computer.

I just bought one, but it was for a drawing and I am not allowed to break the shrinkwrap on it. This is a very mean thing to do to a techie like myself.

I'd buy one but I have a new iPhone and a newish Macbook Air and it's just redundant.

But I'll probably get one anyway... just next year :)

The only gripe I hear is that many web sites still use flash animation and no iOS Apple product support flash. More sites are rapidly switching all graphics to html5 though, so this is a temporary gripe.

I say get one!

iPad- as a lifetime MAC user it was a gotta have- I love it 32 gb Wi-Fi. I use it a t school where I teach, at home, lighter than a laptop when out of the house. I even use it in coin magic. It is a great toy but even greater tool. I use the leather fold up type case to protect the screen when carrying. Now for the real question, anyone know of a high end stylus kit(s)?

I ended up with the 64 gb Wi-fi version. I haven't even messed with it all that much yet, and I already love it! My secretary bought one a day before I did, and she let me play with it. I like Angry Birds and Vegetable Samurai!!!

Scott.

I have the 64 gb Wi-fi. Love it. Kids love it. I stream netflix through it. I play words with freinds (scrabble) with my brother in texas and my sister in arizona. My kids use the educational apps and games I approve. I jack it into my car or my home stereo and play music from my Itunes account or stream Pandora. I use forum runner for this site because it's new and fun. The craigslist app allows you to select mulitple areas and search them all at once (love that) The Ebay app is very nice.

Cons:
Does not run flash content.
Does not multi task with most apps (will be resolved in a software update soon)

My suggestion to you would be to wait until the next release comes out in December. Will have a camera and better screen resolution. Price for version one will go way down if you don't need the new functions.

Best birthday present ever (besides my lathe of course)

Put it this way. My laptop is in the closet. The only reason I take it out is to my picture "doctoring". That's it! It's a fight between the fiancé and I, on who grabs it first!

We are planning to get another one around Christmas.

We have the 64gb w/o 3G. We don't need the wi-fi because we have wireless in the house. We don't take it anywhere out of the house. I just don't see the extra expense for the wi-fi service and the additional cost of the iPad unless you travel a lot. Just my opinion.

Get one! You won't regret it!

Ipad

I bought the the 3g version and am happy that I did. I have wifi at home and work, but I find myself using it in other places. Not only do I keep all my music, and woodturning videos on it, I also use it to check my email, keep track of kids I am working with at school, use it for Google Maps, and about every other thing you can think of. I also got a wireless keyboard to use when I am taking notes in meetings. It also saved me a lot of time taking inventory. I did not have to write it down on paper or try to drag a lap top over to the files.
It was also fun when a coworker was showing me pictures of her new daughter on her cell phone. I was able to show her large pictures with music on my Ipad.

I am a long time Mac user and I am looking into getting one to. But I am going to wait for December. Still not sure if I want a 32 or a 64. How much does the apps, song and movies take up. I do know I will not be getting the 3G one I will be using my my fi from Verizon.

I have an ATT 3G 16GB as well as a Verizon HP301 Netbook and a Blackberry. In the end they are all just toys. I think the iphone has a better design and footprint but Verizon has the best network for traveling.

that's why I'm making pens..
because for me they represent the anti-thesis what everything else has become regarding communication.

you name it,
I've owned it from the days before apple and microsoft and I can't really tell if its made my life any better. most likely not though. Wang, Kaypro, even hauled my Macplus everyday to and from work as my original laptop so I could use MacWrite and MacPaint to work at home.

I think you'll find many that have been "connected" to their invisible electronic masters 24x7 since the 70's via phone, email, sms, txt or VOIP are looking to tune out, get off the grid and get back to basics.

nothing better than a beautifully crafted wooden fountain pen and a sturdy sketchpad or diary to take you back to a time when proper penmanship meant more than how fast one could text with one hand on your smart phone and one hand on the driver's wheel.

I like to think of my pen as my ultimate ipad.

Also if you want a pen toy you can get a 16GB Pulse. It stores text and the related audio at the same time.

You can replace any cross or parker refill by a stylus refill so turn yourself one :)

I have 78 apps that take up 5.6 gigs
I have a very modest music collection 439 songs takes up 1.94 gigs
I have 4.8 gigs of shows for my kids most cartoons series like x-men 23 total

If you want to save streaming content like movies and video i would go big. If just for the Internet and apps then the smaller ones seem ok

I had never even peeked at iTunes before. But before I could even register and use the iPad I had to download iTunes on my home computer and use that to register the iPad. Nothing wrong with that! But since I knew nothing about iTunes, I left all the defaults alone, and evidently one of them was "Sync music to iPad?". Well, 35 gb of music later, I used up more than half of the memory on the new iPad with just music! TG it didn't try to sync all my video!!! I have a 1tb drive in my home computer dedicated just to media. So does that answer how much room can music and videos take up? ;-)

I am looking forward to watching video on the iPad. It has a great screen!

Question: I want to get a cover for the iPad. Any suggestions? I'm thinking a nice leather cover, but I don't know. Something that will make it easier to hold onto!

Scott.

I suggest the Mac cover...

I have a 16 gig wi fi...it is definitely the cats meow.

If you have kids, it is the greatest learning tool ever created. I wam on it. Right now typing this message. I have a 7 year old MacBook that does not have an wireless so now I can take this out to the shop and watch videos and such when I am out there. Also, Mac quality is absolutely unsurpassed.

For those of you who are skeptical... I am a techie for a school district and we will be
buying lots of these in the future to replace books and save money on software and other stuff.

The educational possibilities are limitless. Give your children a gift to get the prepared for their futures b/c devices like this will be apart of their future successes.

Virgin Mobile makes a Mobile Hotspot that cost 40 a month..............unlimited data and no contract.......seems like a good deal to me!

cheaper that the 3G contract from AT&T....

just my 2 cents!

these are great for the minimalist. Comes with a thin transparent screen cover as well.

I have the one from the imac store black micro fiber that closes like a book. It also has slot to fold the cover back to make a wedge. It's OK but the angle for movies and what not is not right.

I have a black micro fiber purchased from Apple for $39.00. It has been used but it cleaned up nicely. Will sell for $15.00 including shipping.

Just an FYI that this won't work. The screen on all the "i" products are capacitive. A normal stylus refill won't work with the apple products.
