For those unfamiliar with the inspiration behind the Pretty Wood Pen contest, Lou Metcalf, a longtime member who passed away a couple of years back would often find threads going off on rants about techniques or finishes or whatever....his technique for dealing with these was to remind everyone that most (himself included) were just here to make pretty wood pens. If people got overly excited about a posted picture (he was a very good photographer as well), he would always respond with "Thank you, I just make pretty wood pens". Enjoy the simplicity of making the most basic of pens and thank those who were here before us that have brought this craft/art/hobby/business so far.

Thank you, Jon, for the summary of the inspiration. Lou's (DCBluesman) time on IAP was winding down when I joined, so I didn't have the pleasure of interacting with him.

Here are some examples of his work with Pretty Wood:

I'm not a fan of black backgrounds because they too often obscure the finer details of the pen on the margins, but Lou was one of the very few that got it right.

I remember when he did the pink ivory one and loved it so much and always told myself I need to get some. Last year I got a couple blocks and was suppose to make for a friend. Have not got to it yet but will do this year. Nice to see his work again.
