just wondering if anyone has used inlace instead of PR or aluminite for filling voids in the pen blanks? I've used it in bowls and it comes out nice. I'm thinking of trying it in the koko I got from the master scroller, Jeff.
just not sure if I can get it packed tight enough to make a solid/stable area.

Sure you can Mark. Most of the Koko's and dragons I sell are inlace filled. Wrap the blanks with some masking tape to make a little dam on top. Pour the inlace off to the side of the picture a bit so that it flows down in. You don't want to just pour over the image all at once. The inlace flows down one side and across the bottom of the image and then slowly fills up. If you just dump it all over the top, you trap air. After it is filled, wrap the blank down on the table a couple times real hard and any air bubbles will be dislodged and float to the top. It is necessary for the image to be over-full too, because of shrinkage.

Before you begin anything, mark the drill hole. If the end of the blank is not flush..since it's laminated it might not be..flush the end with your saw. measure the distance between the two lines on the face, split it in half and that's the center. Transfer that to the top end of the blank and the seam is the other indicator of where it will be drill. Then tape and fill. Let it sit overnight is my recomendation...plus I'd spray paint the tube and let it sit overnight anyhow, so do both at the same time. Use the tablesaw to trim the overflow inlace off the top, then put it in the vise and drill. After it is drilled, place the tube over the image to decide where it will land. Mark the tube, trim the blank, install the tube.

I do not recommend inlace dye..don't buy it. I find it likes to bleed. pre-colored inlace is fine and doesn't bleed. Clear inlace is fine, just use a couple drops of testors oil paint, or powdered dyes work the very best. Crushed stone is great, make the mix real thick and you'll have to help it pack into the hole. If you spin it and there's a small void, you can re-pack it. Powder stone is the toughest to pack in, but it can be done..some toothpicks can help smash it down in. Always paint those tubes, just in case..maybe you don't have quite enough color in your inlace or something..you can never be too sure. I kinda like a bit less color in the inlace with a painted tube, so you can see down into the image.

Oh...forgot, one more thing. I don't pour the inlace from the can, it makes a big mess. I dip a stick in the inlace, hold cup over the can and insert stick into cup to drissel and scrape the inlace into the cup. Just cleaner and less wasteful that way.
