Can someone please help me select a plain black ink cartridge for a Junior Gent from Exotic Blanks? I've tried the email route to no avail. I'm sure they're busy which is good for them. Being new at this area my wife and I can't figure out all the options on their site. Appreciate your help, thanks.

For the JR Gent look for a Schmidt 888 or a 5888 rollerball refill. Exotics sell both in different nib widths.

I presume from your other posting about your wife's pen that you are looking for fountain pen cartridges.

I am also puzzled by the Exotic Blanks site because it doesn't appear that they offer black ink in either bottles or cartridges. Where's Henry Ford when we need him?

They appear to carry Private Reserve, Noodlers, DeAtrimentis and J. Herbin inks - DeAtrimentis and J. Herbin inks are more expensive (but not necessarily better), while Private Reserve and Noodler's are more economical although Noodler's is only available in bottles. Private Reserve used to be one of the more popular ink brands in the US, but went through some difficult times - it was essentially a one-man operation, until the original owner died unexpectedly. The business was acquired and operated for a few more years until the new owner became ill and died. The brand has now been acquired last year by a US company that owns several pen and ink brands and with products manufactured in Europe and Asia. But word on the street is that the resurrected products are as good as the original.

That is odd. Both J Herbin and Private Reserve carry a good black. But I cannot find any black cartridges on Exotics site. Bottled ink usually come out cheaper per ml, but it's not as straight forward as a cartridge. They carry J. Herbin Peale Noir in bottle. The small bottle is about the same price as a page of cartridges, if you are already have a converter.

Darrin is a brave guy. After 50 years of marriage, I know better than to make decisions for my wife, and I would imagine that your wife is no different!

Seriously, you can often find black or blue standard international cartridges at Staples or Office Max. And I see that you aren't too far away from civilization (Madison), and I would expect to find shops in a college town that sell fountain pens and accessories.

I use Goulet and Anderson pens for my ink. Anderson has a lot of ink in sample sizes. That is a good way to try different inks. You wont be able to find the same ink supplied with kits because no one publishes the ink the kits use.

In a previous post, David asked about cartridges, and concluded that the whole field of cartridges and converters is a vortex. But that's nothing compared with the unbelievably broad and complex set of issues surrounding inks.

Color is a simple matter, but then there is shading, shimmer, drying time, saturation, 'wetness', feathering, pH, water resistance, permanence, tendency to stain pens, nibs and other items, lubrication, and freeze resistance, just to name a few of the things that the ink community gets excited about.
