I started this as a separate thread before Eagle posted his, but thought I'd join in. Just two comments for our friends in Rita's path:

First off, I want to extend our thoughts and prayers to you. The news reports here said Rita is the 3rd most powerful storm on record, with wind gusts in excess of 220MPH, and sustained winds over 175MPH. They expect it to lose some of its strength before landfall, but it's still going to pack quite a wallop, even a hundred miles or more from where it makes landfall (especially to the East). Please stay safe, and don't take any chances.

Second, if you get a chance, please check in over the weekend so we know you're OK.

I think Dario and I probably will be ok if the current path stays on track. I think Monty has already left (I hope!) He is in the Houston area. If any of you other Texans get to a computer check in. My truck is full of gas and I will head for the hills if it comes my way. Don't want to ride it out with an 11 month old.

Well...I am headed to Edinburg which is almost directly South of San Antonio close the Mexico border. It is probably safer there actually IF Rita doesn't change it's current projected path. It is much closer to the water in case though.

My thoughts are with you guys, head for cover ! My insurance screens this morning are all about Rita and all the adjusters heading to Texas. I guess we should have stayed with the build a bomb shelter idea from the 60's. This way everyone could go down to the bomb shelter and be safe. After all, 175 mph wind, sounds like a NUKE to me.

Anthony,

I lived through a lot of Super-Typhoons (counterpart of Hurricane in Asia)...and yes they are like NUKE. One in particular broke the US Air Force wind gage at 190 MPH....don't have a record after that how much stronger it went. In a small island you cannot run...just brace for impact.

My wife and I are riding this one out. I expect to lose the shop and part of the house. If we did need to leave the roads are so backed up the 'cane would have come and gone and we would have traveled 5 miles. At least I'm 100 miles inland from Galveston.

What Eagle said!!! Jim Boyd, keep your head down... it could get ugly. I have family in the Houston area and for now it looks like most are staying put. My daughter's hospital hasn't turned anyone loose, and my brother is fire and rescue Chief. Besides, like you said, the way the roads are packed right now they wouldn't get very far.

I just saw that they're shuutting down all the refineries just in case. Wow, this should be another big blow to the US economy as well as the personal loss of so many that will get flood or wind damage. All this and hurricane season isn't over yet!

1:45PM CDT I just looked at the weather info and Rita has been downgraded to a category 4 storm and looks to be turning a little to the East. Maybe the folks in the Houston area won't get hit quite as hard as first thought......let's hope so!!!

As I posted on another thread, call me crazy, but the wife, future DIL and my self (edit: forgot to mention the 2 dogs, 7 cats and 27 chickens) are staying put and riding this thing out. I wasn't going to get in the traffic with the other 1.5 milion people evacuating the area. It was taking 12+ hours to go what normally take 45 to 60 minutes. In fact I heard on the radio today that to save gas, some people put their cars in neutral and were pushing them to save gas because there was none to be found on the evacuation routes, and they were going faster than the traffic.
I spent the day boarding up and clearing the yard, putting things in the garage and shop. I'll check the yard again in the morning for anything I may have missed.
Last report has Rita making landfall farther east near the Beaumont / Port Arthur area.
I'll post again tomorrow and as long as I can until I lose power and/or phone lines.
Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

The prayers are a done deal, Mannie, but I have one question for you. Are you nuts?? I do understand the traffic situation, but it should improve by tomorrow. My sister's argument was, "We made it threw Andrew okay." Duh! Can you say Category 2 and half the size? God speed, buddy!!!

Way to hang Mannie ! Baten down the hatches and God's speed. I know I would not be in that traffic jam. There's no place like home, and I hope your's is still there after this passes.

To Johnny and all members of the IAP in the area of the hurricane, stay safe, keep well, be strong and may god keep you safe in the palm of his hand. A silent prayer is said every night in Australia for your safety and well-being. God Bless to you all.

Just to drop a note, It has been hectic here in Texas. A bus exploded this morning with evacuees on it. Killing around 24 elderly nursing home residents.

I grew up and graduated from Vidor, Texas which is about 40 miles Northeast of Port Arthur where the hurricane is going to come on shore. I have family down there and lots of friends. My father is still living down there and has decided that he is going to evacuate to a place that is only 40 miles north of there. ( Not to bright). I talked to him this morning and he is doing good. he is going to do whatever he wants so I have to respect his wishes.

Johnny

Hang in there and to all in Texas. Our prayers are with you. My cousin lives in Ft Forth. From what he said they are due alot of rain.

Good luck and stay safe.

Alan

Got the last little bit in and everything else secured by about 11AM this morning. Winds were just starting to pick up a little, maybe 10-15 mph gusts if that much. Just finished my shower, so now it's just keep an eye on the news and weather.
The only thing I wasn't able to get was a generator. Since I'm on well and septic, I'll be out of water as long as the power is out. Guess I should go ahead and spring for one, then I'll never need it.
Planning to fill the tub with water this afternoon plus I've got two 40 gallon water heaters in the attic I can drain if need be.
As for cooking, I'm on propane, so no problem there. I will however, turn the gas off at the tank tonight just to play it safe. I've brought in the campstove and a 10 gallon propane tank on the back poarch for coffee in the morning.

Johnny, I see you're from Vidor. I grew up in Port Arthur myself, so I know that area quite well.
