There has already been some talk on the TV and in the paper about the minor "MILLENNIUM" catastrophe we may experience in another three weeks: but have not seen any comments about the second part of the problem. Hope someone can help.

Older computers, VCR's and etc. won't properly deal with DSL now that it comes a few weeks earlier than it used to. My question is whether these devices actually recognize DSL or are they just programed to "spring ahead and fall back" at a particular time of year. Another way of asking this question is if I manually change my various electronic clocks to DSL on the correct date, will they bump the clock another hour when the old DSL date arrives or can just I set them and forget them? Thanks

We were just briefed about this last week. Older hardware is "hard coded" to make the change as regularly scheduled. So what does this mean to us? It will affect us in two ways. 1) We will have to make the change "manually" for the new time on March 11th, and 2) we will have to "manually" change things again to correct for the regularly scheduled change. In simpler terms, this means we will have to move the time ahead on 11 March, and move it back an hour a few weeks later when the systems make the "automated" change.

That's not necessarily true. If you send or recieve e-mails, files, etc., then it could affect it. It's best to make sure that your OS (assuming that you have XP, Vista, or OS/x. I'm not counting the Suns and IBMs of the world. Just our little universe.

Kol Tov,

Billy: Thanks. Your comment just lit up a light bulb for me. Computers, at least, have an option to adjust for DST automatically. If you turn that option off, at least you won't have to make that second change on every cycle!![^][^]

Jeff: Did you leave out a few words? I'm not quite getting what you are trying to say?

If you allow MS to update yoru computer with the regualr patchs and fixes this won't even be noticed on your computer. Other devices that think they know when DST starts will need to be set manually now and reset when it thinks DST starts. We have several of those "Atomic" clocks at home and they wont' be a problem either. I highly recommend them. "Dumb" clocks like your microwave will need to be reset as usual.

If you are like most people with their VCR's you can just put a piece of electrical tape over the blinking 12:00 and then it won't bother you [:)]

<br />Move to Arizona and you wont have these problems.

Yeah....then all you will have to worry about is dying from thirst or heat stroke!![:D][:D]

That and having your computer over heat. But then again, you won't have to deal with your computer not handling the DST.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com and on the front page there is a link to how to set up your computer to deal with the new daylight savings time dates... there are downloads that will take care of Windows and Outlook.
Real nice and simple... no muss, no fuss...

Looks like I'm going to have to unbar the door to my "Y2K Underground Vault". I better get it restocked and all ready to go for the Daylight Savings Time Fiasco. "Let's see ... what's on my list ...... fresh water, dry goods, and ... oh yeah ... I'm going to need some fresh ammo to keep out those frantic IAP members." [:D]

I am also not too crazy about DST. Given the choice, I would vote against it.

That said...I'll continue enjoying the "longer" days of equinox [;)]

Ok Doc,

You would be easy.........I'll just sneak up behind you and bonk you on the noggin with a coconut [;)]

Either that or I'll knock you out with a pecan fired from my sling shot. then I'll ransack the vault for all the burl wood you probably have hidden down there [}:)]

Setting the barn on fire would be an udder disaster.

Ohhhh ok ... here we go with the cornball jokes. Looks like we're going to milk this for all it's worth. But, what the hay! [:D][:D]
