So I am wanting to try my hand at casting. I have seen some starter kits out there but was wondering if anyone had suggestions on a good place to start.

Thanks in advance

I'm in the same situation as you (new to casting) so I look forward to what others say.
My best advice till then is to visit the IAP library and read the articles on casting resin. There's a lot there to digest.
I thought about ordering a kit but ended up ordering Silmar 41 resin (it comes with the hardener) and transparent pigments from here...

Of course, two minutes AFTER I placed the order I noticed a member here who has just started selling resin (and molds).
Hopefully he or others will chime in here.
Best of Luck!

Thanks. I just found some of those articles and started reading up. Hopefully in the next few weeks I will have somthing to show here.

You might have a local IAP Chaper. Attend one of the meeting they have ever so often and ask them to put a demo on! We just learned something about casting at our last IAP Indy Meeting a month ago. Good luck!

I will add that it is cheaper to buy a gallon than to go to the Hobby store and buy the 1 quart container for $25 bucks. You can go to http://www.uscomposites.com and they now have a quick link on their home page that will take you straight to the Silmar 41. 1 Gal. shipped cost me $48bucks

That's what I did. (although my link is different, I believe it gets you to the same place).
I also ordered the pigments.
What do you use Seamus?

If you are able to make the next ArkLaTex chapter meeting in April we are going to have a demo on casting. Both Rangertrek and Phunky 2003 have offered to share what they know with the group.

Do you know the days in April yet? I can make arrangements ahead of time so I can make it.

Thanks everyone for the help.

The meeting is going to be at John's house and he has not set a date yet. He is going to try to set the date by the end of this month. As soon as I get it I will post it in the local chapter forum.

When you start casting, get a notebook to keep your notes.
You will want to keep track of the amount of resin and hardner for each mold. Note the amount of any pigments use. And, keep track of the time when you first mix the ingredients together and how long before is starts to harden. Note temp and conditions inside or outside.

Maybe, just maybe, when you do that spectacular blank, with the records, you can reproduce it again.

How do I know this......?, yep you guessed it. I did not keep good records.
