Some of you may remember my unfortunate encounter with a bandsaw from way back in April.

After 2 surgeries, countless stitches, metal pins, severed nerves, and more hours of physical therapy that I'd care to remember I'm officially back in the shop for good. I had a couple of weeks shop time just prior to the second surgery during which I was able to rough out some bowls and turn a handful of pens, 2 of which are shown below:

I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words in the threads above and for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers. Long term prognosis is very good, 80-90% of full use. I still have some therapy to go through but the hardest parts are behind me. Now I have to figure out how to cover the portion of the bills that my insurance company won't. Even with a good PPO I will be responsible for at least a couple thousand dollars of copays and deductibles. All for 1 little finger and a momentary lapse of concentration.

Welcome back... I'm sure it goes without saying that you'll not have any more "momentary lapses of concentration"... I know we all get in a hurry or have our minds somewhere else when we are working on repetitive stuff, but we also usually pay for it in the end.

Knock on green wood (two taps to the side of the head), but so far, no accidents with the saws... it helps that I am terrified of them, so pay really close attention to where my fingers are.... most I've done so far is stick my fingers into a spinning chuck... that hurts!.

Btw, those are two nice pens... I really like the Rosewood Burl.

That looks like that hurt... The pens must have been a major pain.

The rosewood burl is one of the prettiest pens I have seen yet. VERY nice! Sure wish I had some rosewood burl...

Welcome back, I had a similar run in with a table saw, Therapy is a bear, but worth it in the long run I'll get about 60 to 70 % use back,
On the bright side the pens are beautiful, the Rosewood Burl is fantastic.

Welcome back and glad you beat it all...... I must say that is an absolutely wonderful piece of rosewood burl, may be the prettiest I`ve ever seen. You did it great justice with your great craftsmanship.

Jason,
If those pens are and indication of what you can accomplish between surgeries, I really have to step up my game. Great looking pens and delighted you are back and doing well.

Those pens are GORGEOUS!

I ALWAYS use a sled and clamps when pushing wood thru a cut. My sled even has two handles attached where my hands can't possibly reach the saw blade if any part of my hand is on the handle.

Glad to have you back! Hope you don't mind that I used you as an example to my kids. both for what can happen if you loose concentration and what you can accomplish with hard work and determination. Beautiful pens I expect well be seeing many more from you.
