Well it seems like talking to my mother i will have more workshop space. Right now the workshop is a 3 car garage. The cars all must be parked there in the night so it's pretty hard to fit all the tools in and clean up and all. Well she's going to let my dad and I install an attic ladder in the garage that goes up into the attic above that's the same size. The flooring is finished off up there so it would just need lighting. When i get the money saved up and buy a NOVA 1624 i'll turn the attic into wood storage / bowl turning area. I can't wait!

I hope it's air conditioned. Also, make sure you have a good dust collection system up there or you will have wood dust in the house.

I have to check it out tonight, it's actually part of the second floor really. It adjoins my sisters room but is closed off w/ a screwed on plate. I'm not sure of the temp up there, there is a window. I like the convenience of being able to get down to the shop from there, kind of like a two story shop.

Just checked it out and ran into a small problem. The floor joists run parallel to the garage doors and there is a load bearing wall in the back. This would mean the stairs would have to go through the garage door openers.
Well my mother made a compromise. She's going to partition off part of our finished basement to use as a shop. The best part is on one wall there is a crawl hole that goes into a storage are that's about 3 feet high. Back here is where all the lumber is stored. The other part I like is that we have the removable ceiling tiles. So if i want to run 220v over to the work area it should be pretty easy. The only thing i'll have to pay for is the jet overhead air cleaner.

Your attic is no place for heavy tools, as it is often difficult to spread out the weight evenly. Also, sagging or vibration in the ceiling is not good for plaster/drywall/paint joints. The basement will be much better in the long run, methinks.
